If improving writing is the goal, then have students write an essay. Additionally, they could write in other ways to expand the ways they can organize their thoughts to communicate ideas.

Students could:

📧 Write a letter to the editor that involves sharing evidence they have researched on a topic they are passionate about. Then they could opt to share that letter with the local paper.

💻Make a web resource about a health-related issue and share well-researched information using multiple forms of media to make it more engaging for a potential target audience.

🎙️Script and record an audio or video podcast (in Flip, for example) to share their knowledge with their peers in the course. They could also download that video and share it on social media if they choose.

🟠Write a blog post in an engaging way for a specific target audience about a topic of interest that incorporates elements of informative, argumentative, and narrative writing.

🎮Create a game related to the concepts or skills they are learning to share with others to review for a certification exam.

📺 Make a screencast to demonstrate a skill.

📸Create a photo essay depicting and describing a process they are learning.

📊Make an infographic to summarize concepts, data, and other information related to a topic.

🗣️Generate questions about a topic, conduct an interview, and include the results of the interview as part of a wider research essay to gain additional perspective and understanding on a topic.

🖼️Prepare a written script to practice for a polished presentation.

There are dozens of ways that students can use writing for different purposes.
