Gatsby pursues happiness by creating a fake persona of himself, he creates this illusion that he needs to be with Daisy and only Daisy, that he needs to be rich, a confident, “Oxford man” to be happy. In the long run he was blinded by what he thought was love, he never got a chance to grow outside of Daisy and he died fullish and unhappy. Something you can learn from Gatsby is self worth, he had it in his mind that if he presented himself the way he truly is he wouldn't be accepted.
