From this I can infer that this spirit was affected by what Scrooge said because firstly, after he said he would be good, the phantom’s hand altered. Secondly, when Scrooge said he would completely change, the phantom’s hood and dress shrunk, collapsed and turned into a bedpost.

The text shows one bit of evidence can be found on line 20 to 21 according to the text Scrooge is desperate to live and he doesn't want everyone to hate him so he said to the spirit that he would give people coal and give his worker some coal and money to enjoy Christmas. The ghost felt bad for him because scrooge gave up all hope, then the spirit took his word and granted his wish.

It is easy to see that every time Scrooge asks a question,the spirit starts to shake or dwindle until the spirit can’t take more questions and dwindles down into a bedpost that Scrooge wakes up holding.

It shrunk, collapsed, and dwindled down into a bed spot”  (line 30). Also the text says, “For the first time the kind hand faltered” (line 23). From the text I can infer that what Scrooge had said to the spirit, gave him a chance to change his life around. In my opinion I would give Scrooge a 2nd chance because I think that everyone should be given a second chance in any situation.
