The struggle for women's rights began before the Civil War. In the 1820s and 1830s in most states, any white male was able to vote. After the war black males were given the right to vote. Women activist saw this as the chance to have the power to vote go universal, regardless of gender. In 1910 women in certain states were given the right to vote. World War I then slowed down the movement to have the amendment ratified, but made the argument stronger. Proving that women can be just as patriotic, by doing the jobs of the men away at war the 19th amendment was ratified. Women were finally given the right to vote.

In 1913 Women's suffrage activist planned a large scale parade during president Wilson’s inauguration. The parade got a lot of publicity after many people in the parade got harassed by other people at the inauguration. During WWI, many more protest started to pop up. Many protesters got arrested for for blocking traffic, this didn't stop them. While in prison many of these protesters still protested with hunger strikes and were forced fed in prison. Theses protest worked very well, as the public stated to give sympathy to their movement.

Women’s suffrage had its ups and downs. From not getting votes to actually having more rights than they did before. They passed and denied laws and rights many were crucial and is what the suffragettes wanted. They had many chances to be voted and many laws were voted upon during the years of 1936-1999. This went on for a while as you can see but many of the best rights were passed at these times. For example: in 1942 a law was passed “if women replace men would they be paid the same wages” many disagreed but much more agreed and this law was passed with 78% favored for yes and a low favor with 22%, And, this escalated from there then women’s rights, then the right to vote. So in the end all of their effort for equality was finished.
