She learned that when things get hard in life you continue on and maintain positive and if you view yourself in a negative way others might not see you like that. There's gonna be obstacles that are gonna try to stop you from be you, you just have to continue on the road. Alice learned in the end that she really is beautiful even with a messed up eye. The "accident" she had with her brother shooting her eye with a BB gun is the main reason to the cause of her self esteem issues. She fears her daughter will feel embarrassed or weird to have a mother who doesn't have both of her eyes. Her daughter doesn't see her in that way though.  Her daughter is innocent and isn't aware of her deformity, she only sees her mother.
