The relationship between letters and sounds. It’s about understanding how letters or groups of letters make specific sounds.

Examples:

Scavenger Hunt: the teacher would have cards with different phonics (e.g., th, sh…). Then, you would hide words around the classroom. The goal is for students to find and match those words with the phonics rule. You could incorporate pictures to help some students better understand.

Block Scrabble: In this activity, you provide students with different phonics rule cards/blocks, and they need to match them. Again, pictures could be used to differentiate this activity.

This is for both spoken and written words.

Examples:

Word mapping: a word is written in the center of a paper, and students are asked to write synonyms, antonyms, and/or sentences with it. Incorporating visuals differentiates this activity.

Vocabulary Charades: word charades! Students can act a word out and others try to guess what it is. Incorporating picture clues is a way to differentiate this activity
