Although the word count was relatively short, my writing task 1 in the Academic English module was slightly difficult for me as it was my first time writing an essay. I had some difficulty in paraphrasing and citations. As paraphrasing in essay writing is new to me, it was not the easiest part of my essay writing task. The structure of my essay was good. The thesis statement and outline were clear and the ideas in the outline were present in each paragraph. Despite some mistakes in paraphrasing there was a good use of citations to support the key arguments of the essay. The essay was coherent despite some grammar mistakes and a poor vocabulary. The reason why I did bad at paraphrasing is that I have a weak vocabulary. My arguments were not supported by enough references and citations, which made them less persuasive. My action plan to fix these areas of improvement is to do a wider range of references in my body paragraphs as well as including examples and analysis. I will also include counter arguments to give a better view of the topic. I will also use more academic writing such as using synonyms and complex sentences. This will enable me to improve my paraphrasing, analysis and essay writing skills. It will positively impact marks in my future writing tasks, such as the mock writing exam on December 14th, and my final writing exam in February. By improving my essay writing

I recently submitted my second research project essay draft and I have received feedback from my tutor Rodolfo. This essay has 4 marking criteria: Task fulfilment, essay structure, essay content and language. To meet these criteria, I first made sure to follow the feedback that Rodolfo gave me in the first draft submission. I also checked if my essay had the right structure: Introduction with thesis statement and outline, body paragraphs with arguments, examples, and citations, and conclusion with summary and recommendations. In addition, I made sure my paragraphs were coherent and made sense, I added some references and synthesised some arguments as we learned in one of the lectures in research project. I believe that I addressed my essay question properly by mentioning a variety of references and citations and including some counter arguments in the same time. However, I think that I can make some improvements in my academic writing as well as my argumentative style. That is because I used non-academic language several times in the essay, and I did several grammar and punctuation mistakes. In addition, Rodolfo said that I could add a few more sources to make my arguments stronger and more persuasive. I did well in paraphrasing and avoiding plagiarism as the Turnitin similarity report was extremely low (lower than 10 percent). To fix the small issues mentioned previously, I will use more academic words, such as “similarly” instead of “like”. I will also include more references in my essay, as well as doing more analysis to my arguments and examples so that my arguments are stronger and more persuasive. I think that if I apply these steps in my essay, I will have a higher mark in the research project final essay submission. It will also improve my analysis skills in the Engineering and problem solving module.

During the first semester, it was somewhat difficult for me to catch up with the lectures and all the assessments we had to do. The reason why is that I had a completely new lifestyle as an international student, and it was difficult to handle studying at university and adapting to my new situation. In addition to that, the singularity of the British academic system didn't help. I felt like the way students here study, the way they are being assessed, their exams, the tutorials, and seminars they have, is completely new to me considering what I was used to. This situation was translated in average marks in all of my exams (such as the Academic mock exams in December 2022). However, at the beginning of the second semester I changed the way I studied, I started taking notes in class and asked as many questions about the lectures as I could. Therefore, I had a clear improvement in my essay writing, from 68 in my academic essay task 1, to 70 in the academic english mock exam and finally 80 in the academic english final exam. I also became more familiar with Powerpoint, Word and Excel softwares, which was not the case at all in the first semester. However, I still had low mars on presentations, like 50 percent in my research project mock presentation, or 54 in my academic language in context mock poster presentations. Although I have seen a clear improvement in essay writing, I still want to develop my presenting skills. My action plan to improve my marks in presentations is to read the assessment brief before working on the presentation in order to make sure that it completed all the requirements. And from now on I will make sure to rehearse many times before I do my presentation so that I can be fluid and dynamic. I am sure that by following this action plan my grades will increase as it is easy to do and it only requires a bit of practice.
