Jaundice can occur when the liver is damaged by a disease such as viral hepatitis. Normally the liver secretes bile pigments, which are products of the breakdown of worn out red blood cells, into the intestine. Bile pigments are yellow, and buildup of bile pigments in the blood and tissues can indicate that the liver is not functioning properly.

Rashes and lesions in the skin can be symptoms of probles elsewhere in the body. For example, scarlet fever results from bacterial infection in the throat. The bacteria release a toxin into the blood that causes a pink-red rash in the skin. The development of a rash can also indicate an allergic reaction to foods or drugs such as penicillin.

Second-degree burns damage the epidermis and the dermis. If there is minimal dermal damage, symptoms include redness, pain, edema, and blisters. Healing takes about 2 weeks, and there is no scarring. If the burn goes deep into the dermis, however, the wound appears re, tan, or white, can take several months to heal, and might scar. In all second-degree burns the epidermis regenerates from epithelial tissue in hair follicles and sweat glands, as well as from the edges of the wound.

Third-degree burns completely destroy the dermis and epidermis, and recovery occurs from the edges. Third-degree burns are often surrounded by first- and second-degree burns. The region of the third-degree burn is usually painless because sensory receptors in the epidermis and in the dermis have been destroyed. Third-degree burns appear white, tan, brown, black, or deep cherry red.

Squamous cell carcinoma develops from cells immediately superficial to stratum basale. Normally these cells undergo little or no cell division. In squamous cell carcinoma, the cells continue to divide as they produce keratin. Typically, the result is a nodular, keratinized tumor confined to the epidermis. If untreated the tumor can invade the dermis, metastasize, and cause death.

Malignant melanoma is a rare form of skin cancer that arises from melanocytes, usually in a preexisting mole. A mole is simply an aggregation or "nest" of melanocytes. The melanoma can appear as a large, flat spreading lesion or as a deeply pigmented nodule. Metastasis is common, and unless diagnosed and treated early in development, this cancer is often fatal.

The lesions are often circular with a raised edge and in ancient times were thought to be caused by worms.
