Journal articles are the primary way psychologists communicate new research and are a key part of studying psychology at university. While they may seem unfamiliar at first, learning how to read and understand them is an essential academic skill that you'll develop throughout your degree.

As you read the article, pay attention not only to the research itself but also to how it is organised. Most psychology journal articles follow a standard structure—Introduction, Method, Results, and Discussion (often referred to as the IMRaD format). Understanding the purpose of each section will help you locate information efficiently, evaluate research critically, and build confidence in reading scientific literature. Becoming familiar with this format before you begin your studies will give you a valuable head start for your first year.
