Cuban Missile Crisis 1962

In 1962, the U.S.A. learned that the USSR had been building nuclearr missile silos in Cuba. Cuba is very close to the U.S. so it would be easy for a nuclear missile strike by the USSR. JFK created a naval blockade outside of Cuba to stop any nuclear missiles that were being sent to Cuba. He also sent extra U.S. soldiers to Florida in case they had to invade Cuba. After about two weeks, the Soviet Union agreed to remove the nuclear warheads as long as the U.S. didn't invade Cuba.

Communism vs. Capitalism

In a communist society, the money is evenly given out no matter what job you have. What made communism popular was the opportunity to take the homeless off the streets. During the great depression it wasn't a bad thing to be a communist. The problem with communism is that it gives the government all the power. In country with a communist government, there are only two classes; the rich and the poor. In a capitalist society there are the rich, the poor, and the middle class. The government doesn't control how much money you get, and people can start new businesses that can skyrocket; earning the people a lot of money. During the Cold War the 2 major powers (The USSR and The U.S.A) had a big fight over the system that should be used, communism or capitalism, this fight being the cold war.

Causes of The Cold War

The cold war was caused by a disagreement between the U.S. wand the USSR. The two countries had different governments which caused some threats. After WWII, the USSR left some of it troops in various countries.

The U.S. didn't like how the USSR didn't withdraw it's troops after the war. This started arguments and threats. The metaphorical wall between the east (which was occupied by the Soviets) and the west (which was occupied by the allies). Another thing that the U.S. didn't like was how the USSR was spreading communism. THis made them upset so the threats and arguments continued.

The Berlin Wall 1961

When Germany was divided, Berlin was too. The USSR controlled the eastern half, the Allies controlled the other. The Allied controlled side of the city was surrounded by USSR controlled land. The Soviets didn't want the allies to even have half of the city. To force them out, they ceased all traffic and didn't allow food or electricity into the city. To around this, the allies dropped food, water, and other valuable supplies into the city. This lasted 11 months. Many people escaped into the more free side of city; west Germany. Because of this, in August of 1961, they built the 103 mile long Berlin wall. Guarded by soldiers, anyone who was caught trying to escape was shot on the spot.

September 11, 2001

On September, 11, 2001 terrorists hijacked 4 airplanes and flew 2 into the twin towers of New York City, 1 into the Pentagon Building of Washington D.C, and the 4th couldn't reach its destination and was flown into a field in Pennsylvania. The name of the group of terrorists that planned the attack was Al Qaeda, the leader of this terrorist group, Osama Bin Laden. Osama Bin Laden believed that the U.S was the leader of an alliance against Islam. The 4th plane was possibly heading for the White House, but because of the brave passengers it crash landed into a field in Pennsylvania. After the attack the U.S hunted Al Qaeda leader, Osama Bin Laden down, and caught and killed him 10 years later. After this, tighter airport security came into place, like adding metal detectors, security dogs, not allowing liquids through security, and some more. This is an attack that wounded, but didn't defeat the U.S and will be remembered for a long time.

Senator McCarthy

Joseph McCarthy was a senator during the Cold War. He accused many people of being communist spies and effectively ruined their lives. This was called McCarthyism. When he did this, people actually believed him. He mainly accused political enemies but also accused famous people like actors.

Khrushchev

After Joseph Stalin died of a heart attack on March 5, 1953, Nkita Krushchev took over as the First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. He made a famous comment to the U.S. saying, "We will bury you." This comment angered the U.S. an led to more suspicion. This also created what is know as the arms race which is were the U.S. and the USSR tried to have more weapons than the other. Specifically, they tried to have more atomic bombs.

Personal Computers and the Internet

Personal Computers were first sold in the 1970's but then they were mostly for businesses. In the early 80's people started purchasing computers for their homes. The Internet also started and people could acess information from other people who were on the other side of the country.

During the 1980's, in the communist USSR, people started asking for their freedom of speech and free elections. At this point, the country's economy was failing. The USSR's leader, Mikhail Gorbachev, decided to give citizens freedom of speech. This only worsened the situation for them because now the citizens could protest and riot other things. This protesting led to the opening of the border between East Berlin and West Berlin. This was the beginning of the collapse of the Berlin wall. They continued to protested for their regions to be able to leave the USSR and become their own countries. By January of 1992, the USSR was spilt into 15 different countries.

Fidel Castro

Fidel Castro overtook Cuban President Batista in 1959. In 1952 Fidel and his brother, Raul, tried to take over the Cuban government and were sent to jail. After the Castro's were let out they didn't give up. They went to Mexico where they gathered followers, and then went back to Cuba where they started the guerrilla war. They won the war and overthrew president Batista. When Fidel Castro took over he quickly became friends with the Soviet Union, and installed a communist government. In 1961 the U.S invaded Cuba through the bay of pigs, this attack did not end well many U.S troops were captured or killed. This shows how desperate the U.S was to take Fidel Castro out of power. In 2008 Fidel Castro became ill, so he stopped ruling and passed the job to rule (presidency) over to his brother Raul. 8 years after that, in November of 2016 Fidel Castro died.

Korean War 1950

After WWII, the country of Korea was split in two; North Korea and South Korea. With the help of the Soviet Union, North Korea set up a communist government. The U.S. helped South Korea set up a Democratic government. In 1950, North Korea invades South Korea. The United Nation (UN) tells North Korea to withdraw it's troops but North Korea continues the invasion. To Prevent the spread of communism, President Truman sends soldiers to protect South Korea. The U.S. pushes the front line all the way to the border of China. China then sends 1,000,000 Chinese soldiers over the border dressed as North Koreans to fight the U.S. back to the original border. In 1953, the war ended with the exact same borders as it had started with. The war costed the U.S. over 33,000 soldiers.

U.S. Involved in Vietnam War 1960

In 1960, the U.S. became involved in a conflict called the Vietnam War. The country of Vietnam was split in two, the countries being North and South Vietnam. North Vietnam was controlled by a communist group. North Vietnam was trying to take over South Vietnam. The U.S. didn't like this because they were trying to stop the spread of communism. Many people thought that if one country fell to communism, the surrounding countries would follow. This was called the Domino Theory. To stop the spread of communism, the U.S. sent soldiers to protect South Vietnam. The American soldiers were not prepared to fight in the dense jungles. The North Vietnamese would jump out from brushes and attack U.S. soldiers. This was called gorilla warfare. There was also a lot of protesting back in the U.S.. People didn't like the violence in Vietnam.

Ronald Reagan

Ronald Reagan was born in 1911 in Illinnois. He was the fortieth President of the U.S. Reagan was elected in 1980. He was shot during an assassination attempt on March 30th, 1981 but he was sent to the hospital and he survived. As President, he shrank unemployment more than any President before him.

Joseph Stalin

Joseph Stalin was the leader of the USSR until March 5, 1953 when he died. He was their leader during the second world war. After his death, Nikita Krushchev took over as the First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.

John F. Kennedy

John F. Kennedy (JFK) was President of the U.S. from November 8, 1961 to November 22, 1963. That was also the date on which he was shot. In an attempt to stop the spread of communism in Cuba, he created the Bay of Pigs. This was an invasion by Cuban Nationals in an attempt to overthrow the Cuban government. This plan failed. JFK was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald. Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson was sworn into office a few hours after the assassination.

Winston Churchill

Winston Churchill was a elected Prime Minister of the UK on May 10, 1940. After WWII, he lost the election but still held a high position in the UK's government. Now, instead of being concerned about Hitler, he worried about the Soviet Union and the Red Army. He died on January 24, 1965.

Harriet Truman

Truman was the 33rd president of the U.S. His presidency lasted from 1945-1953. He created the Truman doctrine which was an effort to stop the spread of communism. He also helped the U.S. join the United Nations. He died at the age of 88 from pneumonia in 1972.
