Throughout the book he displays an infuriating level of arrogance, all while believing that he can solve every problem on his own.

He twists the idea of self reliance into a victim mentality which echoes Emerson's claim that it is "great to be misunderstood." He fancies himself to be a modern Pythagoras, a modern Galileo, a Modern Prometheus. 

Emerson wants the reader to walk away from his essay feeling empowered and inspired to take on the challenges of life. Frankenstein, however, embodies the darker side of Emerson's arguments. His genius contributed to the Allies during World War Two, where he played a crucial role in cracking codes they'd intercepted from the Germans. 

He should have been lauded as a national—international even—hero, so what happened?

In 1952 he was prosecuted for being homosexual. His punishment was either prison or chemical castration, and he chose the latter. This song is told from the Creature's point of view (who will be referred to as Adam), and follows the events of the book, where Adam tells Frankenstein of his early days in the forest.

"Lost and alone
Colder than stone"

Adam's version of self reliance is not a happy one, however. Since society views him as a monster, he is forced into self reliance, as he cannot trust anyone else to take care of him. His quest to "know himself" is not a search for enlightenment, as Emerson's ideal is, but a desperate, obsessive search for meaning.

Chris McCandless embodies the darker side of self reliance, much like the byronic hero formerly mentioned.

He's intelligent, he has limited experience, and he thinks that his brilliant mind can make up for lack of experience. Such intelligence and intuition carries him, up to a point.
