As Red Laser Pointer power further increases, the chance of eye injury increases. Even blinking may not help. Above roughly 10 to 20 milliwatts for visible continuous-wave lasers, even an accidental direct hit on an eye at close range (where all of the beam enters the pupil) could cause retinal damage. If the person was looking straight at the laser, the burn will be in the center of a person's vision.

http://www.htpow.com/highquality-500mw-burning-waterproof-red-laser-pointer-p-1067.html
Except on nights of exceptional clarity and near-zero humidity, if you shine a green laser pointer into the sky, you can follow the beam hundreds of meters up.Green laser pointers are significantly brighter (about 60 times) than a red laser pointer and because of its unusual color it is much more noticeable. Just about everyone has a red laser pointer, but we're pretty sure you want to own the very best - and doing it with a green beam laser is the way to go.So inside of a 532nm DPSS laser is a diode of the wrong color and several crystals.

Several laser experts say the enforcement of regulations is already insufficient and ineffective. "It's a whole can of worms," Dr. Goldwasser said, recalling that he recently received a 100-milliwatt laser as a gift from Wicked Lasers. We describe a green laser pointer purchased in ordinary commerce which could potentially expose the eye to dangerous levels of infrared radiation. We devised a procedure by which infrared radiation from a green laser pointer may be detected with common household apparatus.

Green lasers generate green light from infrared light. Ideally, the device should be designed and manufactured to confine the infrared light within the green laser pointer housing.NIST Laser Safety Officer Joshua Hadler designed the measurement test bed.The system consists of a laser power meter and two optical filters to quantify the emissions of different wavelengths of visible and infrared light. The power meter and filters were calibrated at NIST. Lens holders ensure repeatable laser alignment, and an adjustable aperture contains the laser light around the output end of the laser. This is actually a very inefficient way of producing a laser beam as there is significant power loss. As the 808nm infrared laser is subjected to a Nd:YAG laced crystal and into a KTP crystal for frequency doubling, there is around 25%-35% energy loss.

Like household lights, Laser Engraver are measured in watts, but the similarity ends there. A 100-watt incandescent bulb produces about five watts of visible light; the five-milliwatt laser is only one-thousandth as powerful. But because the light from a bulb is diffuse and a laser beam is concentrated, the effect of five milliwatts on the eye is 10,000 times as intense, according to Samuel M. Goldwasser, a laser expert and author of the online guide Sam's Laser FAQ.
