Heathcote was born on August 29, 1926, in the West Yorkshire village of Steeton. She never met her biological father, but at a young age when her mother’s husband passed away, her mother signed up for service and Heathcote was left with extended family. She grew up with mainly older women in her community who encouraged her to express herself. This helped her later in life to shape and stand with her beliefs.

Dorothy Heathcote is a methodologist who introduced a new way to approach teaching towards kids. She used drama for kids to take up ‘roles’ and inspired the way teachers and other educators approached teaching across the world. Heathcote hated that fact the schooling denied student's social status. She believed that the education system forced students to think they can learn to be good enough some day but never today. In order to break that chain, she made ‘plays’ alongside the students to show how something meaningful can be created with the collaboration of kids and to help them bring the best out of themselves and their imaginations.

The method of ‘role’ or also known as the Mantle of Expert influenced students to work on their skills of gathering knowledge to use in their everyday lives by taking up roles of experts in a profession (Ex: English soldiers, officers, etc.).

In Dorothy’s work her relationship to her audience was based on her interactions with them. In her work she would take on a role and the people around her (students) would become part of the world her character was from. For example she had children act as factory workers to teach them about labor conditions.

Dorothy Heathcote was a teacher in the uk so why is she important? Her method of teaching and activism is unique and still used today. By acting in a certain role or by having her students act in roles she’d assign them the students would have a better understanding of different situations. Her actions can be seen in different forms of activism today. People write books or create videos using different points of view to educate others.

Being treated as experts made kids take on responsibilities that went with their roles, problem solve, make decisions, learn through the outcomes of their decisions, and boost their confidence. At times, it was possible for actual experts or organizations to visit, send representatives or write letters. Overall, this method expanded kids’ imagination and made them more engaged and excited to learn.

Dorothy Heathcote was an activist who wanted to change the way educators approach teaching. She used theater as a way for her students to learn things the education system would normally limit them to, such as history. There was a time when Heathcote entered her classroom as a German officer and her students were British prisoners during WWII. She screamed to a class full of adolescent boys and that awakened the need for the kids to act upon the situation and make decisions for themselves. This just proved to people how the Mantle of Expert pushed students to the best of their abilities to adapt and still learn while keeping them interested.
