Students can't initially construct mental images of a shape without real world connection: ex. what shape is a rectangle, student would say it looks like a door.

These can be seen in grades K-3 in G.A.1. where the words go from describe to distinguish to recognize to understand. The reading describes the beginning of each year as an almost rediscovery of shapes. The students always start each year with a base knowledge of shapes and then get more precise with their language and how they understand geometric figures.  
This same type of progression can be seen in 4th and 5th grade G.A.1 where the beginning of the year focuses on lines, but gets more in-depth as the year moves forward.
The picture examples in the progression sheet also give a good representation of how the students' work should be progressing throughout the year. Students need to develop explicate awareness of vocabulary and how to properly use it as they progress though geometry.
Being able to compose and decompose shapes is beyond important and will be with students for the rest of their lives.
