Every Song Ever by Ben Ratliff is a very interesting choice or a textbook. It is not the typical textbook with straight forward definitions and pictures of diagrams, but instead it is book that not only tells you what to listen to but, more importantly, how to listen to it. Ratliff's whole reasoning of this book was to prove how the more music becomes more accessible to us the way we listen music has changed. Ratliff uses terms to describe his categories that seem obvious in meaning. He discusses virtuosity, loudness, quiet and repetition. In every case he expands upon these definitions to include new ways of hearing these qualities. He talks about the idea of perceived physical space in music, as well as what he calls closeness. Ratliff's book can be hard to understand at times. It makes you think because the answers and definitions are not printed in bold as they would be in other textbooks. It is a great book for someone who loves and understands music already. But for someone who has no music background it is really hard to understand. Personally I would rather it be a reference book rather than the primary text. But even though I did not quite grasp every element, the ones that I understood I really enjoyed reading about.
