Puerto Ricans have been emigrating to NYC since the 19th century in three different waves. The first was when the island was still a Spanish province.

In 1917, the Jones-Shafroth Act declared Puerto Ricans officially American citizens and could travel to and from the US without a passport!

The third wave occurred during the 1950s during the Great Depression, WWII, and the inventions of air travel.

*Nuyorican initially was used as an insult but eventually has been reclaimed and its meaning transformed.
