The IDEA Act defines this to be "...concomitant impairments (such as intellectual disability-blindness or intellectual disability-orthopedic impairment), the combination of which causes such severe educational needs that they cannot be accommodated in special education programs solely for one of the impairments. Multiple disabilities does not include deaf-blindness."
The incidence of students (3-21) in the special education population with multiple disabilities runs about 2-3%, according to various studies. (American Academy of Special Education Professionals, Special Education Eligibility-AASEP Chapter 9 page 67).
Common assistive technology used in the multiple disability environment may include:
physical or electronic communication devices, hearing aids, wheel chairs, special chairs/desks, reading aids, specifically configured laptops/iPads, specifically configured toys or distressing items and a classroom layout that allows for effective and efficient mobility.
Other accommodations would include the use of specialized therapists, targeted schedules (such eating times, recess), staff who can adjust/maintain feeding tubes and other medically necessary health items.

When researching my prior IDEA Category, Multiple Disabilities, we learned that Deaf-Blindness is not included in that section. Therefore I am taking this opportunity to highlight it in our Padlet.
Deaf-Blindness Disabilities has it own IDEA section, which is the following;
"(2) Deaf-blindness means concomitant hearing and visual impairments, the combination of which causes such severe communication and other developmental and educational needs that they cannot be accommodated in special education programs solely for children with deafness or children with blindness."
The incidence of deaf-blindness in children was 10,441 for the year 2021. The majority of this was in ages 3-21 (National Center on Deaf-Blindness 2021 National Deaf-Blind Child Count Report).
Common assistive technology would include slant boards that allow for easy usage through velcro, varying textures and shapes of the items attached to the slant board which can sit on a desk, a standing desk that could include a cubby space for personal items, and chairs that have a modular design to specialize accommodations and of course mobile iPads and computers.
Other accommodations would include classrooms near or containing restrooms, classrooms on the ground floor situated near cafeterias or gyms, classrooms that have fixed layouts for the students to learn the appropriate routines. Therapy that ensures academic, social, communication and physical development which can be adjusted to consider the changing student.
