Purposes: While there is no text in the advertisement, the image provided in the advertisement is enough to convey the desired message. The purpose of the ad was to give a public service announcement about obesity and how it’s a problem. The purpose of this ad is to convince people to stop eating junk food, and to exercise and lead a healthy lifestyle. Since the ad is made by a gym we can deduce that they are promoting themselves as an option in the audiences newfound healthy lifestyle.

Audiences: The targeted audience for this ad are people who are overweight or think that they could be in better shape. Specifically, people that see themselves as fat, just like the person illustrated in the advertisement. The reader is positioned as a person in need of a healthier lifestyle, and the narrator (Gold’s Gym) is offering the audience a way out.

Narrative: The narrator in the advertisement is Gold’s Gym. While there is no literal text in the advertisement, the picture, along with the logo for the Gold’s Gym make it very obvious that the narrator is the actual Gym.

Lexis: In the little box in the bottom-right corner of the ad, we see that the advertisement says that it all starts with a “sweet treat”, and that ends up with the reader going to the gym. The simple words and vocabulary used are used to target the mass audience, people from all different social classes.

Grammar: The grammar used further stresses that the end point is at gold’s Gym.

Genre: There is very little text, structured in one single sentence, making it seem very simple. As simple as going to the gym.

Presentation and Organization: The image is very engrossing and intriguing, and the text is put in small letters at the bottom as to not obstruct the view of the image. The reader, looking for an answer to the image, will then look down and read the words written in the advertisement, understanding the image and the solution to the problem stated.

Reader response: The reader reacts by connecting the advertiser, Gold’s Gym, to the solution to the problem, obesity and being fat. This way, readers will be influenced to go to this gym to try to solve their problem.

Ideology: This advertisement uses the ideology of being socially accepted as an elite person in society. Since being fat lowers your personal image, the advertisement plays this to their advantage to make the audience think that without Gold’s Gym, they will be fat and therefore lower in the societal ladder.
