Dynamic character

Even though Amanda and Leo are the main characters and most people would assume they're dynamic characters, I believe that in the end, Grace changes the most. She's mostly in a coma for the whole story, but as Leo and Amanda start changing certain things at her birthday parties, they realize that she seems to be changing. She gets taller and starts saying things that nobody understands. When Angelina finally frees the spell, Grace seems much more mature and can see things nobody else can. Angelina gave her powers that only she can control, and while in the coma, Grace figures out what's going on in her life and starts to think differently about things.

Protagonist

The protagonist's of this story would obviously be Leo and Amanda. This book was based on the task given to them by Angelina, to travel back in time and try to fix certain parts of Grace's birthday parties. In the end, Bucky informed them that they were actually stopping Grace from receiving her powers which was what Angelina wanted. They knew the right thing to do was to try and get Angelina to give up her powers and finally live a normal life, and they finally persuaded her to do so, leaving Grace incharge of everything Angelina orignally possesed. I think the author decided to make Leo and Amanda protagonists because this whole story was about them. If it was coming from someone else's point of view such as Tara or Rory, they would technically be the main characters, but they story wouldn't be as exciting. Wendy Mass definitely did a good job describing their journey and what is was like for them, especially coming from the eyes of Amanda.

Theme

In my book, a major theme, actually stated, is "We can only go forward with life". The actual line from the story comes from the end, when Angelina passes her powers onto Grace and boards the train which represents her moving ahead in life. The line states "The train doors swoosh closed, a clear message that we, like that train, can only go forward". This theme represents what Amanda and Leo have gone through on this journey, and even though things might not have gone how they wanted, you have too keep moving ahead and eventually, things will turn out ok. This did eventually happen and Grace ended up with Angelina's powers.

Narrator

The one main narrator who also happens to be the protagonist and main character is Amanda. She tells the story from her perspective and we get to see what it was like for her through her whole journey to save Grace. I think the author picked this character to tell the story because we're able to see how she's feeling while going on an adventure back in time. Any of the other characters would've only been able to share what they heard from Amanda, not the whole story. The only other narrator is Grace, but only the second last chapter is in her persepctive. This was was great author's craft because after everything that Grace went through, it was nice to hear what really happened. We got to hear most of it from Amanda, but Grace didn't tell her and her friends everything.

This story takes place in so many places and time periods because it is based on 2 kids who travel back in time. This book occurs during modern time, probably right around now because they have smartphones and modern technology. Leo and Amanda go to so many birthday parties, which were at the bowling alley, the beach, the magic castel, the pottery place, and at Graces house. They also go to Angelina's house, David's bar mitzvah, Grace's house, the hospital, the train station, and at the movie premiere. Even though these friends go to a lot of different places, the author does a good job making sure the reader knows where the story is without any confusion.

Antagonist

The antagonist in this story actually ends up being Bucky Whitehead. I would've never expected it to be him, but for some reason Amanda and Leos plans keep going wrong, and it ends up being his fault. An antagonist is usually mean or a "villian" of the story, but Bucky actually did it for a good reason. He felt like Angelina had too much to worry about and it was time for her to pass her powers on. Amanda and Leo were asked to help change 3 birthdays so Grace didn't have to worry about the powers until she was older. Bucky knew that Grace was ready, so he tried to stop Leo and Amanda so she could recieve her powers and Angelina could finally be able to do things for herself, other than always worrying about taking care of everyone else

Static character

2 static characters in my book are Leo and Amanda. They're the main characters, but they didn't really change at all. By the end of the book, I don't really think this adventure has taught them anything that they didn't already know. I guess they didn't know how to time travel, but that was only for a short period of time when they were able to go back and change Grace's birthday parties. In the book 11 Birthdays, the first book in this series, Amanda and Leo learned a lot about Angelina and the powers she possesed, but by the 4th book which would be The Last Present, they already knew what to expect.
