Zara Window Display-Allie Arnott

This Zara window display was based out of the Bangkok location. The minimalistic approach to the display allows for a sophisticated look. The visual merchandisers incorporated the primary color blue to give the display a calm and comfortable feel. I am assuming this display was created during the springtime, being that blue is a popular color to use for this time of the year. White is the other main color that can be noted in this display, giving it a sparkling accent and a brightened look. The mix of grey clothing offers a sophisticated feel to tie the whole display together and finish it off. The aesthetic and contrast of one primary color and two neutral colors helps to make the blue stand out and attract customers. The texture of the walls in the display is shiny, and they appear smooth. This look offers a lighter and brighter feel to the display and opens it up. The light and brightness of the walls display a clean and minimalistic look. Using white on white is meant to show a smart, sophisticated, and subtle approach. The vertical structured lines in the window suggest a proud and strong quality. They add elegance and strength to the window and suggest a sense of pride. The circle in the center of the display eases the tension of the multiple vertical columns next to it. It is designed to break up the repetition of the continuous lines. The placement of the mannequins is an asymmetrical balance and appears more interesting than a formal display. It is designed to attract the customer to look because it looks slightly odd or unusual. All together, the look is designed to have a sophisticated and clean look, while giving off calm and collected vibes to consumers walking by the store.

Anthropologie- Malinalli Martinez

Anthropologie is one of my favorite examples of well-thought out visual merchandising in-stores. Their displays always have a theme and are extremely creative. Their entire store is set up to have each area have a different theme. This attracts your vision to each area, because it's as if each area tells a different story. This display consists of analogous colors- such as green, green blue and yellow green. These colors exist next to each other on the color wheel, and because they have shared characteristics, they create harmony. This display is primarily green, yellow, and blue. This visual display is mainly focused on color psychology- using colors to effect people's mood while shopping. The colors used have similar effects on moods: Yellow represents relaxation and summer, Green represents springtime, summer and cool, Blue represents calm and comfortable, and blue -green represents liveliness, water, and sky. Along with the color scheme, the texture of the display helps bring their idea to life. This display is made out of recycled paper and much resembles a forest/tropical setting. The color of this display says a lot about what Anthropologie wants its customers to think about their merchandise and the kind of retailer they are. I believe this visual display is meant to portray the importance of human connection to nature and earth conservation. The recycled items create a unique texture that resembles leaves while the color scheme speaks of green grasses and blue waters.

This is a window display from an Anthropologie in Troy, Michigan. By the looks of the display it looks like it was created for summertime, given the blue colors that resemble the ocean. It looks that the visual merchandisers tried to bring Greece to their displays by creating the historical and natural landscape and incorporating that into their displays. The window has little white cubes that were carved into little homes and were placed at different heights to make it look like the hills of Greece. On the ocean wall it has some writing that says, “Of all the oceans and all the seas you were the kindest one to me….” This display used cool blue colors and white neutral colors for the background to resemble the Aegean Sea, which is located in Greece. The blues and whites gives a summer feeling where people who pass by might get the feeling that they are on a summer vacation in Greece. I think this would attract many customers who are getting ready for a vacation. The bright fun colors of the clothing are perfect for a summer getaway to somewhere hot and sunny. They only used two mannequins, which makes me think they are appealing to girlfriends that are planning to vacation together or maybe a mom and daughter trip. The color scheme all blended very nicely. For the background they used cool blue tones that look like they were blended together with white to create many lighter and darker values. The two mannequins they used had two very different options of clothing. One with a skirt and the other wearing pants. The bright orange and pastel purple really compliments the blue background, giving it an overall very attractive appeal. Anthropologie does a great job at using colors and other objects to display trends and a very appealing vision for their customers.

Anthropologie Desert Cacti Display- Taylor Tamura

I selected Anthropologies’ Fall 2016 window display. I was immediately drawn to the display because I found it interesting that the designer paired cacti with a rather dainty garment. There is a symmetrical balance in the display with the focal point being the garment. Cacti is often something that you wouldn’t want to touch, however the designer uses that to their advantage by creating a contrasting texture with the white silk dress. The material for the garment and the texture of the cacti seem very strange, however, the opposite textures are very effective. There are different variations of the color green which is a secondary color, however the garment itself is white, with red and blue, two primary colors. The designer utilizes colors from each of the color families. Yellow, pink, and red for warm colors, green and blue for cool colors, as well as white for a neutral color. The flowers and fruits of the cacti are kept minimal balancing out the overpowering green. The background itself is very washed out, representing a rustic look, similar to a desert adobe house. The red background with the green cacti are contrasting colors, the viewer is not quickly drawn to background, allowing them to focus first on the white garment, and then on the green cacti.

Banana Republic Display - Nicholas Warner

I selected the window display of a Banana Republic. I feel that this store has always had success in drawing people in, not just for their products, but for they present themselves. The stores layout is very well thought out, even though it may come across as very simple. The window displays mixes the types of clothing they sell, meaning the mix men's and women's clothing mannequins in their windows, not separated on sides. They also update the style of the clothing they use in the window display based on the windows. For instance, women's dresses change in colors and styles based on the season they show off. The mannequins for men's clothing will always display one suit, but will update as well based on seasons. They also draw people in by the lighting they use in their display windows. During the fall and winter seasons, they dress the mannequins in darker clothing, and then place lights pointing up at the clothing, making the colors pop and appeal more to consumers. It's a very powerful move on their end, and people don't always realize how strong of an impact this has in drawing their attention.

Swindlers Display - Elizabeth Link

This is window display for Swindlers on University off campus. They are a locally owned lifestyle boutique dedicated to bringing Tucson unique pieces especially from more exclusive brands. I was drawn to this display due to the variety of colors and textures that cohesively went together. This display has three mannequins that all feature a two-piece look, each with accompanying accessories. The left look has contrasting colors of white and black; the pants are black and white checkered with a tied black crop top and a necklace that stands out on the “bare skin” of the mannequin. The middle look also has the contrasting black and white with warm peach added as the lettering across the front of the baseball tee. This is another tied up top but this time in a knot. The metallic skirt add texture to the look and match the clothes racks in the back. The neutral colored accessories subtly finish it off, with the necklace showing the most against the white part of the top. The right look is a softer look with pastels, ruffles, and chiffon on the top however the jean skirt that mirrors the metallic one adds a stiffer texture so the whole outfit is not billowing. To continue the opposite trend, the cool light blue with the warm peach create a complementary color scheme. Being synonymous with the other looks, the right look also has some sort of bow and a necklace that stands out. Overall the color scheme includes light blue, peach, metallic, black and white, and other neutrals. While all the looks are different, these small details bring them together. Even the outside of the store goes with the display; the Swindlers sign matches the metallic and peach scheme and the inset window that creates a frame matches the black and white scheme. Besides being a visually appealing display, the outfits are a good mix for warm or cool weather and being a local store I’m sure they cater to Tucson’s everchanging temperature in the fall.

This is a window display I found for Topshop on Oxford Street, London. The first thought that came to mind when I initially saw this display was that it created a fun atmosphere and made me think of Topshop as a company and what they stand for as a brand. Topshop is one of the leaders in fast fashion and the window display invites its consumers into the store by creating a party theme. The display uses both primary and secondary colors, but the colors of the balloons are diluted to make pastels and the wigs on the mannequins are neon. Most of the balloons are light pinks, purples, blues, white, and orange whereas the wigs are different and bright magenta and neon green. This is a way the store uses stark contrast to draw in customers because the neon colors really grab attention. The store also uses many different textures in its display for emphasis. There is the shiny textures in the balloons along the top of the window display and also on the sides using the large heart balloons. They also made a large cake along the floor of the display. This is to continue the party theme throughout and staggers the mannequins so that all of them can be seen by customers walking past. They are also all sitting in different positions to create a story among the window display. Another theme that is evident is that the store displayed was catered specifically to the crowd in England. The main mannequin standing front and center of the display is holding a shield with a large, embezzled flag of England. This could be to celebrate a major event that was going on in England at the time, which is similar to how in America, all the stores decorate for holidays including the 4th of July.

This is a picture of a shoe store called Sportie LA located on Melrose Boulevard in downtown Los Angeles. This is actually the first store that I had a part in building and installing. This creative store design uses various color schemes, and textures to help convey the desired image for the store. The base primary colors of the store are mainly neutral colors like grey and white and also the lightly shaded reclaimed accent wood. The name of the store “Sportie” is represented through the bright and bold red color used in a few different places in the store. The basic neutral colors allow for the red accents to pop out along with the colorful merchandise. The use of red as a secondary or highlighting color also gives a warm feel to the store. There are also various textures used in the store that help convey a vibrant energy. The reclaimed wood is used for the front counter and also on paneling throughout the store. This give a trendy and earthy vibe to the store. The white tiling used on the back wall helps to create a noticeable contrast between the wall and the bold red letters “SLA” and the wood used again inside the letters. Another aspected used in this design was the use of the LED lighting throughout the store. The red lighting helps tie the color into the whole design layout of the store. The different color schemes and textures used throughout allow the store to have a energetic look which helps tie into the image of the store being “Sportie”.

I chose this window display because of how busy, eye catching, and abstract it is. The creator for GUCCI GHOST is Trouble Andrew who started drawing on Gucci products, creating his own style and custom items. His style is very artistic, street, and urban. He is a former skate boarder who turned musician and graffiti artist. This window represents his work, interests, and artistic abilities.

The basic theme for this window is white and red which are complementary colors with splashes of yellow and black. The white walls make the pattern on the floor pop out and draws your attention to the featured display items. One particular item that grabs your attention is the giant elephant labeled REAL. While looking at the elephant your attention draws to the mannequins placed in the front. The lighting is clear and crisp, which shows the details of the chaotic display. The texture of the display is smooth, clean with a dash of ruggedness. This window makes you stop and look and wonder at the details and various items on display.

You can see how on the right side there’s an array of red birds moving along the display making it have more dimension. The two outfits on display seem to be made out of feathers making sort of a contrast between the birds and the outfits by the textures of it. I really liked the simplicity of the colors as well making it more nature to see. The contrast between the outfits really stand out with the white backdrop making it a focal point. With the three main colors being black, red, and blue these primary colors really set the tone of the season as well.
