But since he served as my faculty advisor, I had the pleasure of getting to know him. The older I get, the more I miss the days I spent as a student in F&M’s English department. I saved every anthology, novel, and play from that time, and my college books line the shelves in my home today. Thank you, Joe Voelker, for giving me this gift. Godspeed!

HIs energy, humor , staggering intellect and passionate engagement with life have been and continued to be an inspirational and an integral part of my life whether together or not over the years. HIs contributions to anyone who crossed his path will remain and be valued. He will be terribly missed but his presence will continue to be felt, loved and full of life.

Like holding water in your hand” James Joyce, Ulysses. I am so saddened to hear of Professor Joe Voelker’s passing. I remember him so clearly in my first class with him, his quick wit, his love of watching us learn and his kindness in our stumbling. He was, in so many ways, the ultimate teacher and someone I will never forget. Joe taught me how to write clearly and concisely, without worrying about consequence. He also gave me confidence in myself, something I needed at the time. My thoughts and prayers are with Cathy and his family. He was larger than life to me, and I will never forget him.
