The Marshall Plan occurred in 1947.

The Marshall Plan was an aid package provided by the United States to help rebuild European countries who were recovering from WWII. This was also a measure in preventing the Soviet Union from helping these countries and spreading. Secretary of State George Marshall provided 17 billion in funding to European countries.

The impact of the Marshall Plan was an economic miracle in Western Europe. Western European industries were producing twice as much before the war broke out and increased trade between America, causing an economic boom in the U.S as well.

The Berlin Airlift was the response to the Berlin Blockade. The Soviet Union had taken control of West Berlin and had blocked all access to West Berlin. The people of West Berlin lacked resources and were starving. In response, Truman sent food, fuel, and supplies by the air to the city. Resources were airlifted for over a year, supplying the city without the Soviet Union's help.

The impact of the Berlin Airlift was the Soviets calling off the Berlin Blockade.

• October of 1962

• The Soviet Union were on the verge of setting up missiles in Cuba and this was a threat to the U.S. because the eastern front was very vulnerable to the missiles and could've been attacked.

• The impact of this event was that it humiliated the USSR because Nikita Khrushchev told John F. Kennedy that they would halt the construction of missile sites and return their missiles.

• 1954-1974

• Vietnam was split into two parts, North Vietnam and South Vietnam. The communists governed the northern part of the country while the southern part was non-communist. Communist leader Ho Chi Minh wanted to unite both parts of the country. The U.S. did not like that and decided to take military action.

• In the end, South Vietnam became communist and it damaged the reputation of the U.S.

• July 20, 1969 - July 24, 1969

• American astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin Jr. became the first people to land on the moon.

• This impacted the U.S. because they were able to win the space race and beat the USSR in putting people on the Moon

• Richard Nixon visited China for a week in 1972. He wanted to build relations between them and the U.S.

• The impact of this was that the relationship between the Soviet Union and China was starting to weaken and people were starting to believe that the power of the Soviet Union was starting to diminish.

NATO was an alliance between 12 countries against the Soviet Union. The original NATO members consisted of the democratic nations of Belgium, Britain, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal and the United States. These nations would cooperate and preserve peace, using military power to protect the peace.

It was started by Greek communists who attempted to overthrow the government of Greece with the assistance of the Soviet Union, sparking a civil war. In order to support the Greek government, Truman issued the Truman Doctrine. Truman pledged to stop the spread of communism and assist the Greek government. Due to American support, the Greek government defeated the communist rebels.

• November of 1989

• The gates of the wall were finally opened and Berliners were able to travel across Berlin without anything standing in their way. The people destroyed the wall with their own hammers and machines.

• The impact of this was that Berlin was finally united as well as East and West Germany.

Following the end of WWII, Germany was divided between democratic countries and the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union took hold of East Germany and East Berlin. Due to many skilled workers fleeing East Germany, the socialist government of the East built a wall between East and West Berlin.

The impact of the Berlin Wall being erected was the prevention of East Berliners from fleeing the city and moving West. However the official purpose according to the socialist government was to prevent fascists from the West from entering the building.

After WWII, Japan lost control of Korea and it was divided between the United States and the Soviet Union. This created the countries North Korea(Soviet supported) and South Korea(United States supported).

In 1950, the communist leader of North Korea started an invasion of South Korea. Due to the Soviet involvement in helping North Korea in this war, the United States responded by counterattacking and provided support for South Korea. This was known as a proxy war due to the USSR and US fighting each other indirectly. In 1953, both sides called for a ceasefire.

The impact of the Korean War was the demilitarized zone and the continued separation of both countries to this day.

The Warsaw Pact was the alliance of communist countries, including Russia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania Albania, Bulgaria, and Czechoslovakia. This alliance was created to battle the democratic alliance of NATO.

The impact of the Warsaw Pact was that it allowed for greater control of Eastern Europe by the Soviets and prevented countries from leaving the Soviet Union.

Sputnik was the first earth satellite. It was launched by the Soviet space program. It revealed that the Russians had greater technology than the U.S.

The impact of the launch of the Sputnik was the space race. The U.S and the USSR battled to possess superior technology over the other. This led to Americans developing their own satellite and planning to put a man on the moon.
