Comic Book - Reindeers

In 1944 a group of 19 men established a long range radio navigate system on St.Matthew Island. 29 reindeers were released for backup food source. Within months the system decommissioned and the men leave the island. The reindeers were left behind. However, the reindeers found
themselves with their favourite food lichen. There were no predators so the reindeers bred easily. In 1957 humans came back to the island for a research task. In just 13 years the reindeer population sky-rocketed to 1,350. The reindeers were in excellent health and fat from the lichen. In 1963, the humans came back and the population went up to 6,000! The dense herd's huge appetite eliminated the lichen, so they had to survive on grass. The reindeers' body weight dropped due to the less food. In 1966, the human came back once again to find the island littered with reindeer skeletons. The population went from 6,000 to 42. 41 females and 1 male. The habitat's resources had grown smaller and smaller and the population had been unable to survive the winters, so in a matter of months the population plummeted. The island was so big, yet its resources only so many.

In 1944 19 men established a radio navigate system on st.Matthew island. 29 reindeers were left behind on an island, for backup food source. Since the land was full on lichen, the population grew from 29-1350. 6 years later researchers revisited the island and saw that the population was now 6000. Since the population was so high there was less food which is why there was less fat. The food chain was disturbed because of their own selfishness for eating more food. In 1966 when researchers revisited the island once again, they only found 42 reindeers, 41 female and 1 infertile male reindeer. Since there was no way to reproduce the reindeer population ended completely by the 1980s. This story tells us that the food chain is really important and if it is disturbed the organisms consuming it will eventually die off.

Researchers visit the island again and find that the reindeers' population immensely grew since they were able to reproduce at ease.

in 1944 19 people leave 29 reindeers on st mathews island. Since their land was full of lichen, their normal food the and with no natural predators their food chain was not disturbed hence the population spiked up to 1350 from just 29 and they had healthy amount of fat meaning they were consuming excess of food.
Later in 6 years they revisited the island to see the population spike again up to 6000, since the population was so high there was less food left for all of them, they now had low fat and their food chain was disturbed due to their own selfishness of eating more food. consequently when they revisited the island a few years later they only found but bones of the reindeers and 41 female reindeers with only 1 male reindeer left.

The comic begins with a group of riendeers who are beginning to adapt to the new habitat. In 1944 these 29 reindeers were left behind with a supply of lichen. Then an ecosystem is created and the population increases because the reindeers have adapted to the habitat and have reproduced and created a larger number of reindeers. This increaded the population by a large sum of numbers. The Island had no predators so they bred easily. In 1957 the humans retuned for a research task and said that the reindeers were in excellent health thanks to the lichen.

Comic Book

The comic states that in 1944 a group of 19 men had established a long range radio navigation system on St. Matthew island. Over there, 29 reindeers were left behind as a backup food source. In a few months the system failed and the men were forced to leave the island. The reindeers had a fresh supply of lichen which were very nutritious and the population kept growing up to 6000. They were fit an healthy because of the lichen. However, these 6000 reindeers kept on consuming more and more lichen and eventually it all finished so they were forced to eat sedge grass. This did not keep them healthy and was not enough nutrition. During winter, it was hard for them to survive with the lack of food they had. Only a measly 42 were left. They eventually went extinct.

In 1944 US coast guard brought 29 reindeer to St Mathew island in Alaska . US coast left the island but left the reindeer behind. With no predators to kill them and island full of lichen their favourite food, they reproduced. The harsh winter killed most of them and the only reindeer left were unable to reproduce. Slowly they died. It shows that predators keep a balance in the ecosystem.
