Atum rose from the waters of Nu. Nu was considered the dark and vast chaos that existed before anything else. Atum created a hill to stand on and then produced his son Shu and his daughter Tefnut. The children created the order to separate chaos and bring stability to the world- this order was called Maat.

Shu and Tefnut created Geb, the Earth, and Nut, the Sky. They also produces many other gods and goddesses such as Isis, Osiris, Seth, and more. Atum's tears became the first men of the earth who followed Maat and worshipped all the gods.

The Egyptians believed in many gods and followed a polytheistic religion. The myths created served the purpose to explain nature's forces which were controlled by the gods and goddesses. The religious beliefs that the Egyptians followed were to worship and please the gods so that they would not do harm to the people. The people of Egypt looked to the Pharaoh for religious practices. Pharaohs were believed to be descendants from the gods and therefore they were also worshipped. Egyptians built massive temples and practices many offerings and rituals to appease the gods.

One significant fact about the Egyptians is that they practiced mummification. The Egyptians had a very specific belief on how to get into the heavens. In order to be judged, the physical body must be preserved. Bodies were wrapped in linen and prepared for burials in the tombs to make sure that their souls survive after their passing. If their body was correctly preserved, then their heart was judged by Osiris. If their heart was lighter than a feather, they were admitted to the heavens.

Perhaps one of the most interesting things about the Egyptians were their construction of the pyramids. The shape of the pyramids represent the primordial mound from Earth's creation. The pyramids represents the falling sun rays. Many pyramids were polished and built from limestone to appear as bright and dazzling. Pyramids were named in reference to the sun and its qualities, such as The Southern Shining Pyramid. Pyramids were built west of the Nile because the sun set in the west and that was connected with the realm of the dead in mythology.
