After Dana saves Rufus, the power dynamics shift, and Dana finds herself in a perilous situation as Rufus's mother had framed Dana for supposedly “killing her child”.She was beaten by the lady which is violent and irrational as she didn’t even find out the real reason. She was also faced with a traumatic and very violet situation as she had a rifle pointed right at her for saving the child. She could have died right there which made it horrifying.Just imagine yourself being in such a situation…knowing you’ll die the next second.

How does Butler make this chapter so horrifying?

Butler makes this chapter horrifying by describing the tense situation in which Dana finds herself in. In the passage, Dana finds herself in the past in which she saves a boy named Rufus who was drowning and gave him mouth to mouth resuscitation. After that, the rufus’s father pointed a gun directly at Dana’s head this chapter includes a horrifying and tense situation as Rufus, who is drowning has not much time to live as people who drown tends to die very quickly, thus it builds tension as the reader are in suspense whether Dana saved Rufus in time or not. The rifle being pointed directly at Dana’s face also builds suspense as the readers do not know if Dana actually got shot. Thus Butler makes this chapter horrifying by describing the tense situation in which Dana finds herself in.

-Through the tense situation Dana is in

Butler makes the effect of time travel extremely sudden without Dana having any sense of awareness of what is going to happen next. She puts Dana on the spot by throwing her a situation that requires immediate action from Dana, and that sends Dana into a panic without a moment to take in her surroundings and understand the situation she’s in. There was also the possibility that Rufus could not be saved, and that would only lead to more fear and disappointment from Dana, and she would also have to potentially bear a huge beating from Margaret because she had the completely wrong idea about Dana. Butler also presents one threat after another, first Dana having the fate of a drowning boy in her hands, being beaten by a senseless mother, and then being faced with a rifle that would put Dana’s own life in danger.

The disbelief and alienation from Kevin that Dana encounters after returning.

After Dana returned, she’s faced with Kevin questioning where she went and the change in his behaviour. Once she got back, she’s questioned by Kevin with aggression in his voice, demanding a reason of why she disappeared. He faced her and said “What the hell…how did you get over there?” He whispered. He then grabbed her tightly by the shoulders and asked her what happened as if she wasn’t real. The use of the words “hell” is a huge shift from what he usually says which shows how much disbelief he was in as well as him whispering it to her. The use of force as he “held her tightly” and “touched her as if she wasn’t real” also tells us how he’s treating her differently and how he was in disbelief and treating her as if she was going to be gone again.

Butler makes this chapter horrifying by describing the vivid fear Dana feels through Butler’s use of language. This is shown through the sentences “ ‘You don’t know!’ I was starting to shake again. ‘Whatever it was, I’ve had enough of it! It almost killed me!’ ” This shows that Dana was scared as when she started recalling what had happened, she started shaking and panicking saying that she could have died. Butler also showed the fear in the sentence “I moved uncomfortably, looked around” this shows that Dana was so scared that she was uncomfortable in her own home. She also looked around, as if the rifle would appear at any time if she wasn’t on high alert. Thus, Butler makes this chapter horrifying by describing the fear Dana felt.

Butler makes this chapter horrifying through the use of the suspense, violence as well as making readers think or feel that either Rufus or Dana might possibly die a horrible death when the book just started with only 7 pages. At first, when I read the sentence “I bent to push him another box full, then straightened quickly as I began to feel dizzy and nauseated. The room seem to blur and darken around me.” I thought that the main character, Dana was going to die before the story even started, which was actually scary because I still had 200+ more pages to read and I don’t wanna read about her time in heaven. After Dana saved Rufus, “the woman began beating me” showed that that woman was very violent which led to me thinking, who will wanna marry such a violent woman? Reading on, another man appeared, which I assume to be that woman’s husband, said: “What the devil’s going on here” and he held a long, giant stick rifle and was about to shoot Dana and she was gonna die a second time. That rifle pretty much answers my previous question about who the real “devil” is which is kinda scary because I don’t wanna get possessed by Satan while reading this book.

Butler generates horror by "describing the tense situation in which Dana finds herself in", she portrays Dana's intense situation and the tension arises from the unknown elements surrounding Dana's time-travel experiences, building a sense of foreboding as she navigates the unfamiliar circumstances, creating suspenseful atmosphere in the narrative. Dana is subjected to physical violence when she intervenes to save Rufus. The brutal beating by Rufus's mother and the subsequent threat of being shot amplify the tension.

Butler makes this chapter horrifying by focusing on how Dana felt throughout when the blame was on her. After Dana saved a Rufus, Dana had a beating from the woman assuming that she murdered her child. The angry man then pointed the rifle on Dana thinking she killed his son. Due to panics, Dana did not have enough time to react thus it turns self-defence into speechlessness and confusion. This makes us wonder if she would die any second, innocently.

Butler makes this chapter horrifying by describing the vivid fear Dana feels through Butler’s use of language. Phrases such as ‘ “i was going to die” ‘, ‘I was shaking with fear, with residual terror that took all the strength out of me’, ‘never felt so close to death’, ‘ “It almost killed me!” ‘, ‘ “I dont feel safe anymore” ‘ emphasise how much the incident has affected Dana emotionally and physically. The incident caused Dana to feel terrified of her surroundings, and just the thought of it makes her feel uncomfortable, scared and weak. This also caused her to think over the things that had happened. She realised that she could have died, had it not been for the good timing of her vanishing back into the present.
