I actually lost my chance to join orgs and I regretted it a lot. Don’t be scared of the responsibility it holds since masaya din sya along the way, you will have those people beside you and you’ll not be alone naman.

When it comes to your own class, go go go kasi why not? Try to be one of the officers and even those leaders for groupworks. Mahirap, oo, pero it’s nice to be seen as a hardworking and reliable student leader kaya go lang. At the end, you’ll be much closer to your blockmates than you think. Be confident, student leaders. You know who you are, kayang kaya niyo yan!

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. If may part ng discussion na hindi mo maintindihan, go ask your profs. Wag kang mahiya kahit intimidating pa sila. If there’s no time to ask, then ask your blockmates later on. Mamaya naintindihan pala nila, you can have a discussion naman yourselves to understand it better and you can surely learn from each other (based on my experience).

Always study the lessons to be discussed before the scheduled synchronous sessions. Very helpful. In this way, makaka-participate ka sa discussions and maiintindihan mo na agad ang lessons since may preview ka na about it. Do this especially in BIO kasi nakakadugo talaga ‘to lalo na if mabilis magturo ang prof.

Review the coverage lessons a week before the scheduled tests, quizzes, and exams. Gumagana siya para sa akin. Mahirap kasi if i-mememorize and isasa-utak mo lahat ng discussions the day before lang. If masipag ka and madami kang time, gawin mo ‘to.

Read your books. Some profs kasi nagbbase ng exams or tests sa books, especially if doon din sila kumukuha ng pang-discussion. If you want, answer the exercises provided there para ma-test niyo yung knowledge niyo about a certain topic.

Don’t procrastinate. Alam ko mahilig kayo dito, pero as much as possible tigilan niyo na. Change for the better, charet 1/2. If may tasks nang nabigay sa inyo nang maaga, gawin niyo na agad. Don’t let it clash sa other subjects. Mas masaya if onti nalang yung gagawin mo before the exams. Pero it depends naman kung individual or groupwork ang gagawin. Have the initiative please lang 🥹🫶🏻

What makes you motivated and inspired ba? Gusto niyo ba ng plus points? Oo, kaya pagbutihin niyo ang pag-aaral para may masagot kayo sa recitation HAHAHAHA. Yung ibang prof nagbibigay ng plus points yan, kaya don’t be afraid to raise your hands if alam niyo naman ang sagot. Sa una, nagpaparecite lang, the typical recitation, tapos di mo alam may plus points pala yun kasi at the end niya lang sasabihin na meron pala. Then, maiinis ka lang sa huli kasi di ka nakasagot. Malaking hatak din yan sa grades lalo na if +5 pts. Another motivation, ang calamansi scores sa blackboard. Try niyo ring magpost sa twitter at magmanifest ng calamansi scores dahil clout-chasers tayo lahat. Kidding aside, you know what to do naman na to get these scores. I think dasurv! 😉

This is a note from one of your (cute) seniors. Congrats on making it into UST SHS! I hope these small tips will help you get through your first year (up coming years) in UST.

TIP 1: TIME MANAGEMENT IS A MUST

Sa simula, di niyo masasabing super dami ng gagawin. But believe me when I say that at some point sa SHS days ko wala akong tulog. Time management is important. I highly recommend on making a list on the things you have to do. Set your own deadlines for each tasks to avoid procrastination. Take time to study before the exams, don’t cram study kasi di siya makakatulong sainyo, mas mapapagod lang kayo. Give time for breaks and leisure too. Breaks between tasks are important. Wag niyo akong gayahin na tuloy tuloy gumuwa ng tasks because nakaka-drain siya physically and mentally.

TIP 2: FIND A STUDY BUDDY

Sa totoo lang, merong times na mahirap intindihin yung lessons (lol). So I highly recommend to look for a block mate para maging study buddy mo para may kasama kang mag-aral, umiyak, magrant, at umintindi ng lessons. Find a study buddy who’ll encourage you and help you grow to be a better student/person. It’s not about the quantity of friends you have but the quality.

TIP 3: SLEEP!

Sleep is important. Scientifically speaking, sleep flushes out toxins sa brain mo. A complete 8 hours of sleep is great, but if hindi kaya sana kahit 6-7 hours man lang magawa niyo. If wala namang reason para magpuyat, matulog ka nalang please. Don’t force yourself to go further if your body is tired, just stop, take a breather, take a short nap, or sleep.

TIP 4: ENJOY

Despite the challenges, problems na ibibigay sayo ni UST, enjoyin mo pa rin! UST is a great school, maraming students are dying to enter the university. So galingan mo! Kung may stress man na ibibigay sayo, you deserve to be happy.

If may mga tasks kayo na madadali lang na kayang tapusin for 30 mins to 1 hour, I suggest gawin niyo na kahit na matagal pa deadline kase may mga requirements pa dyan na kakailanganin ng maraming time, yung tipong hindi mo talaga siya maccram like research, maraming revisions na pagagawin dito. huwag kayo magsasayang ng time lalo na kapag maraming reqs pwedeng mag-chill chill muna pero dapat alam niyo limits niyo kase yung mga free time niyo pwedeng makahelp yon sa pag-gawa ng mga requirements. also, communicate with your blockmates. wala nang hiya-hiya kase kayo-kayo rin naman magtutulungan sa class.

hi! like you, i was once a clueless freshie na super naexcite about the new school.

nung pumasok ako ng ust, i thought i was finally gonna be able to romanticize my school life kasi big 4 ba naman right? not exactly. the ride was fun and all and yes it was a fulfilling experience, pero this was actually the first time i experienced a culture shock.

if you're still interested in reading this, then may ikkwento ako! what's a thomasian life without chika diba? so ayun, when i entered school, i met so much friendly people and parang i felt so belonged to the thomasian community. i thought that everything was gonna so smoothly not 'til we had actual lessons na. when i first encountered them, they were way too advanced compared to the previous curriculum of my old school. i felt so intimidated bigla kasi my classmates were answering so much sa recitations and i felt so so pressured and incompetent right after. i blamed myself for not focusing and for being too complacent. i felt so ashamed because it was so obvious na "huli" ako and it hurts my pride that i can't do well.

but guess what, i'm here to tell you na if ever you felt or feel the same way as i do, then you're not alone. i still feel this way 'til now e, but i want to tell you na it's not your fault. it's not yours to blame, but you chose this path and you have to realize once again na this is a new environment. the only way talaga is to adapt. mahirap man tanggapin, but you really have to work hard to survive and keep up. working hard doesn't mean dedicating your whole life to studies tho, you also have to give time for yourself and give it a rest. it's all part of the process.

as charles darwin has said on his theory of evolution, evolution happens by natural selection in which species adapt over time in response to their environment. species change over time. leave your old habits behind. if they fail, then construct new ones. if they fail again, then improvise and repeat. remember why you started. it's never too late to learn. don't be ashamed to seek for help :)

everyone isn’t born to be a leader, but that doesnt mean you can’t be one. there are various organizations in ust shs that can hone your skills and talents at the same time serve the student body. i highly encourage everyone to explore orgs that capture your interest, not just for the position and title, but also for the experience, friends, and most especially, for the student body.

in my experience, i am part of the stem strand society, STEMSoc, under TEAM VP, Campaigns and Advocacies Committee. this org really honed my skills especially in writing, and i used these skills to raise awareness on various social issues.

you can also join academic or skill based organizations like La Stampa, the official publication of ust shs. if you have an interest in student publications and article writing, this org is for you.

nonethless, if you decide not to join any organizations, that is totally fine! we all have our own ways in being student leaders. i hope this helped you, juniors!

Uunahan ko na kayo. SHS is far different from JHS na medyo chill chill lang, though tolerable naman siya kahit papaano basta (1) 'wag na 'wag lang kayong magproprocrastinate. Kung kaya niyong gawin agad, go go go na, or kahit i-schedule niyo kung kailan niyo gagawin (Beh, hindi the same day or the day before ha. Kahit sa tingin niyo madali lang naman siya, di niyo rin suree👀). Possible kasi na magahol kayo kasi makikita niyo, 'di niyo pa tapos 'yan, madaragdagan ulit 🤡. Anyway, you can use Notion (i-Google niyo na lang), very helpful siya para matandaan niyo yung mga kailangan niyong gawin and for time management na rin which is very important (pwede rin siya for note-taking basta check niyo na lang WHAHAHHAHA).

Sa SHS, hindi rin naman maiiwasan na maintimidate or matakot sa mga profs, officers, or blockmates, pero (2) always feel free to approach them if ever na may concerns kayo, problems, or if may hindi kayo naiintindihan sa lessons since kayo kayo lang din naman yung magtutulungan hanggang grade 12 and hindi naman po sila nangangagat, pero if hindi mo siya kayang ma-raise sa mga profs, you can also ask for help from your officers. Pero kahit gusto niyo lang ng simpleng kachikahan or gusto niyong makaclose yung mga ka-blockmates niyo, shoot your shot, malay niyo nahihiya lang din silang magapproach.

Syempre, mawawala pa ba yung hell week? Not gonna lie, but SHS can also be draining most of the time, so learn to give yourself time din. Treat and pamper yourself kasi deserve mo 'yan very much. Okay lang din na magbreakdown and magpahinga at times. There is nothing wrong with it, tao ka rin naman and napapagod din. If there are times na sa tingin mo na hindi mo na kayang tapusin yung workloads mo, lalo na kapag tambakan week, pahinga ka muna then go go go ulit kasi 'di mo mamamalayan, matatapos mo rin silang lahat and ang satisfying and ang gaan sa pakiramdam kapag nakita mo na natapos mo na lahat ng workloads mo. You can also ask for help ha.

Hi! here are some tips that will help you on your grade 11 journey!

First, learn how to do time management lalo na if madaming kailangan gawin na mga activity. Having a proper time management will surely help you to finish your tasks efficiently, and i also suggest you use notion for organizing your to-do list or checklist. Second, learn how to balance your studies and your social life because shs life can be really draining and hard, so i suggest na have fun while studying. Last, just enjoy your gr 11 journey and always remember na it’s okay to take some rest din if things are really hard na.

Take advantage of external resources! Kapag naguguluhan ka sa lesson magsearch ka ng videos, books, websites, etc. na may simpler explanations (esp. sa Bio & Math). Also, read your lessons in advance if you can. Nakakaintimidate minsan yung lessons so helpful if papasok ka sa lecture na gets mo na yung core ng lessons and/or familiar ka na sa terms. Lastly, enjoy lang! Focus on your own growth and build healthy habits. Goodluck!!

'Wag kayong mag procrastinate (proven and tested based on experience; pero if you work well under pressure, edi go charot) But seriously speaking, as much as possible, wag kayo mag procrastinate kasi nakakaoverwhelm if natatambakan na kayo ng reqs, especially if malapit na yung exam week. 'Di na kayo makakafocus sa pagstudy sa exam since divided yung attention niyo. Makihalubilo rin kayo sa classmates niyo kasi makakatulong yan sa inyo. Personally speaking, I've accumulated a couple of regrets last school year. All those missed chances turned into "Sayang ganto, sayang ganyan". I know stepping into a new environment, let alone putting yourself out there, truly is terrifying especially if you were used to sitting inside your own bubble (trust me, I've been in your shoes). However, don't let that fear hinder you from growing! It's better to have "at leasts" than "what ifs". Kaya if I were you, always give your best shot— may it be in participating in class, studying for quizzes, accomplishing your PETAs, or even joining and trying out orgs. It'll be a tough journey to manage all tasks at once, but know that your hardships will pay off!!! I'm rooting for you, tigers <3 🐯

Time management is the one thing that I never got to do and I suffered because of that (This may or may not include the unfortunate people who became groupmates with me). Being a student leader holds many expectations and responsibilities from others, but you can't always please everyone, so as much as possible, always do your best to carry out your duties and responsibilities that come with your role. Also, be open to your blockmates. Make a safe space where they can feel free and safe to voice out their concerns and problems with utmost confidentiality. Even I, at first, never expected that I'd be an officer, but by the time I accepted this responsibility and proceeded to this kind of path, it became a drive and a sense of responsibility that pushed me to work harder as they gave me their trust to carry out the duties that come with this role. Though being a leader is not only a one-man role, you can always collaborate and ask for help and suggestions from your co-officers to give the best work and advice that you can provide.

So, if you think you have what it takes, the confidence, the determination, and the sense of responsibility, even if you lack experience, go for it, because along the way, you will learn how to handle things together with your co-officers. Quality, not quantity, always wins. Do not be naive because, malay mo, they are just being "nice" and not "good" to you. Giving with expecting anything in return is the definition of being nice. Giving without expecting anything in return is what it means to be good. Whenever you're feeling down, you can count on your friends to cheer you up and encourage you to study.

Second, master the art of time management. Hindi natin maiiwasan ang household tasks, daily routines, events, etc. This means that you need to establish deadlines for completing your tasks. To get the most of high school, you'll need to learn how to manage your time well. However, you should not hurry through this stage of your life. Doing your best is the only way to achieve greatness. Work alone if you don't believe you need people to help you. But don't forget that you must leave your comfort zone in order to grow. Here at UST, maturity is an important component of your senior year. Since some of us come from various regions of the nation, we will also encounter diverse types of individuals, which will provide us with a chance to be learn from them and work better.

Finally, be disciplined. bakit discipline? Motivation is what gets you going, but discipline is what keeps you there. If we don't learn self-control, we won't be able to put number 2 into practice. In order to develop as a person, you need to push yourself above your comfort zone. Your survival will depend on your willingness to undertake things you don't really like, but which will ultimately make you a better person.

Last year, I kept it simple and still managed to have a good time. As a result of making new friends, being self-disciplined, and managing my time, I've been able to succeed. Never hesitate to approach me for help when you are having difficulty understanding a certain concept or lesson. I'll help, but only if you promise to keep your average at 90%🤣🤣🤣.

Yung maadvice ko talaga is huwag na huwag ninyo icocompare yung scores niyo or yung gawa niyo sa iba dahil hindi yun magiging healthy para sa inyo and mapepressure lang kayo. Mas okay na magfocus kayo sa gawa niyo and magtiwala na kaya niyo mas magiging maganda yung effect hindi lng sa gawa niyo pati na rin sa sarili niyoo.

This is your poging senior mike. Congrats and welcome to UST SHS. Don't hesitate to approach or contact me if u need or want someone to talk to. Moving into ust shs was such an eye opener for me. I grew up studying with international students and chinese students since I was in preschool, so I never got to really dabble into filipino culture. Growing up in a chinese household obviously didn't help with that aspect either lol. As soon as I arrived in ust, it totally culture shocked me. I couldn't understand the slangs and the words😭. But I am thankful to this day especially to my friends who continue to offer a helping hand whenever I'm struggling to understand them🫶🏻. My advice as a senior is to not enclose yourself inside a box. Try to be more open and socialize with your peers. Having a great set of friends who will go through the same journey as you will not only make it bearable but enjoyable as well. Overall, I hope that each and everyone of you are able to find your group of friends. Don't be shy to approach someone and always remember to make the first move😉. Don't be too complacent. As soon as I entered ust, I found it quite easy. It was actually too easy for my liking. I didn't have the thrill of being challenged. This made me complacent which isn't good. This hindered me from fully unleashing my academic potential. You will never know when hardship will suddenly strike. Don't let the failures discourage you from unleashing your full potential. Use those failures as stepping blocks to further improve yourself. As an officer, you will be tasked to do many things. It sounds so nakakatamad pero it's actually so fun nga eh because you will make the most out of your UST SHS experience. Yes kailangan to do many things but you won't be alone naman eh since you have your fellow officers with you. Don't be afraid to socialize with your fellow officers and peers. Volunteer or join the student council or STEM society. Join orgs and meet new people. This will allow you to meet people from different backgrounds and learn from them. - mike pogi as usual

UST SHS would surely open new doors for you; it may be something out of your comfort zone or something you’ve been working on your whole life. However, no matter what stage of life or career we are on, we are all still learning. So, don’t be afraid to ask questions and put yourself out there. We were all once in your shoes too. May it be yesterday, today, or tomorrow, if you’re feeling the imposter syndrome creeping in, remember that we are all forever growing, and we will always start somewhere. So might as well go for it :).
