Examples:
Napoleon and Squealer constantly lies to the animals that Snowball is the cause of misfortunate events.

People who are intellectually inferior to others have a more difficult time making their own choices.

People who are intellectually inferior to others are more easily manipulated and are less likely to make choices based on their own judgement.

When the pigs made alterations to the original 7 Commandments, the animals questioned it but the pigs just disregarded it and the animals fell silent again.

During debates between Snowball and Napoleon, no animal could bring up another topic because they weren't clever enough. This meant they were only presented with two options and even then, whoever was speaking would win them over.

Napoleon uses his power to take food from the animals for himself.

Power: Over the intellectually inferior

It is easy to control the illiterate (uneducated), they can't express nor think for themselves. 

Example: 

Boxer was easily controlled, Benjamin was not 

Squealer changing the Seven Commandments without the other animals knowing

Clover thought the pigs were changing the rules but she didn't know how to express it so she didn't say anything.

 Animals couldn't read so they couldn't figure out that the rules were changed : bed, alcohol , killing other animals

Fear
Violence creates fear which is handy for controlling less powered people.

One example is when people were killed in the battle of the cowshed and when the windmill was exploded to pieces.

The show trials was a good example in animal farm, when the animals were murdered, the remaining animals were struck with fear which makes them more vulnerable to be controlled.

Theme 
Violence can inflict fear which benefits the leader's power.
