Chlamydia is a common sexually transmitted infection that infects both men and women around the world. This bacterial infection is often transmitted within sexual fluids during oral, vaginal, or anal intercourse. Those who practice unsafe sex or maintain multiple sexual partners are more at risk for contracting Chlamydia. Chlamydia can often times remain asymptomatic, but can still cause serious health complications if left untreated. Yes, this infection is easily cured by antibiotics but it is important to get regular testing due to the asymptomatic nature.

While Chlamydia is known to remain asymptomatic, both males and females can experience symptoms caused by this infection. Men will experience discharge or pus from the penis, a burning sensation with urination, and itching within the urethra. Men infected may also experience pain during sex. Men may also experience painful swelling in one or both testicles, though this symptom is uncommon.

When females exhibit symptoms of Chlamydia, they will often experience abnormal white, yellow, or grey discharge that is accompanied by the strong odor. Discharge is normal, but this kind definitely isn't. Females may also experience bleeding or spotting in between menstruation. This can be a difficult indicator for some, since many women are on hormonal birth controls that may cause their cycle to function irregularly. Similar to men, females may experience pain during urination and sexual activities. As well as lower abdominal pain. In some cases females may experience fever and nausea.

Chlamydia can be treated with antibiotics. Some may get a one time dose, while others will be given a seven day course of antibiotics. It is important to refrain for participating in sexual intercourse until the medication is completed. It is also important to continually get tested afterwards, since repeat infections aren't uncommon.

It is important to be regularly screened and tested for infections, especially if you are a sexually active individual. Being regularly tested can help prevent the serious health complications that follow you if left untreated. As well as ensuring you will not put risk to others. I feel as if there has always been a certain stigma around sexual infections and/or diseases. We are all human and whether others would like to admit it or not, 1/5 have experienced one of these infections their selves. Testing shouldn't be anything to be ashamed of and it improves your safety and those around you.
