I am feeling a little overwhelmed with this content. It excites me to think this is possible, but I have no experience in doing these things. I have been out of the classroom for 5 years and before that we were working with mobile labs.I need to spend time learning most of these items on the checklist. I am very tech savvy and am more than comfortable on the computer. I use the computer all the time to look for information I want to know and I will use it to find out how to do the items on this checklist. I do see the value of all the items on the checklist. I would love to get to the point that I do all of these things.

It is absolutely essential that we use technology in our classrooms, but not just for the sake of using it, we need to make sure that it is being used to enhance student learning, and has a purpose. I was familiar with SAMR, and the pedagogy wheel before taking this course, but I feel that it refreshed my memory and reminded me how wonderful technology can be when it's used correctly in the classroom. Technology surely motivates students, they are excited to be using technology in the classroom, but that shouldn't be our only reason for utilizing it. Not only that, but it makes a difference when the teacher is also enthusiastic about using tech tools in the classroom! I think the checklist is spectacular, it is clear and concise. It's a tool I will share with other educators and reference back to when I need a reminder of how my class should use technology! ~Jennifer Leishman

I am excited to learn all about these new ideas for using technology in the classroom but I am very stuck in the substitution and augmentation steps of the SAMR model. My students get to go to Computer as a class with a technology teacher where they learn, create and achieve more of the items on the checklist. I am teaching students to be aware of how to be safe online and use technology as a tool to learn, practice and research content at this point. I am not achieving several items on the checklist in my own classroom. I will keep learning.

One of the things we do is include others in our lives as mentors to help us broaden our knowledge and global perspective. Having someone with different culture and different experiences enriches our own experiences and knowledge. I don't believe, as a professional, that I need to model good citizenship by being present online and by connecting with others on social media. Although this can have it's place, my presence online is limited to that required by my profession and, separate and distinctly, my personal presence (I do not share my Facebook information with anyone who is not my in-person, real life friend). I do not mix my personal and professional online presences, as I see their roles as being very different.

I'm excited about all of this information and how to utilize it in the classroom. I always encourage students to think outside the box and share how they interpreted and solved a problem. I believe I'm well on my way to implementing creative thinking in my classroom and already do many of the things on the checklist. I would like my students to use digital portfolios. I do a little of this but not even close to a year's worth that they could look back on and say, "I remember doing that in first grade." I want to look into 'sketchnote" now. Redefine... If this old school teacher can learn to redefine learning in this digital age, she will have an inspired, productive, and highly capable class. I will step out of my comfort zone to do this. That will be BIG in itself. Anything after that will be BIG. ...So, I'll start with virtual field trips for Social Studies using the smart board. And Genius Hour time where students can explore and learn. And writing and research projects with a digital portfolio where students can keep projects. I work hard to allow my students to be creative. Inquiry projects have been an excellent way for me to push myself to allow students to research and work in a variety of ways and produce different methods to show their learning. I'd really like to connect to others globally with my students this year and help broaden their understanding and experience that way. I haven't tried anything like that, but would love to give it a go.

Many of these items found in the checklist are in my classroom. The one item I pride myself on is learning with my students. I try to implement a new learning tool in my classroom each year. For example, this year I tried Genius Hour. It was fantastic, and challenging at the same time, but well worth the mistakes, challenges and knowledge gained!

Love it! I'm going to print this list and post it somewhere that I will see often in my classroom next year. One thing that has been a game changer in my classroom is using SeeSaw for the students to create a digital portfolio to display their progress and archive their work. One thing I would like to try but have not done is invite guests into our classroom live or virtually to broaden our knowledge and global perspective. I'm apprehensive because I have never used anything like this and would be afraid that it would mess up. That's a pretty lame reason, right? I'm going to have to just go for it! I would love to connect with classrooms from different places in the world to give them learning opportunities. - Lesley

After reading the items on the checklist I began to reflect on how much we do as teachers. I don't do all of the items on the checklist because of the grade level that I teach. I teach First Graders and have somewhat limited technology available to my students. I like one of the other comments about printing off the check lift as a reminder. I think I'll do the same . Keep the focus on the kids !

My challenge is that as a librarian I usually only have students 1x for 45 - and that includes checkout! So our learning opportunities are very limited. That said I do try to use tech in very engaging ways that may make its way back to the classroom where more time can be spent. I think #4 to make an archive of their work would be the most important thing to implement. Nancy

I agree with the concept, but I also see the difficulty. As mentioned in another post, when you have a number of students it is difficult to keep all of them producing quality work. Also, one of the hardest items (no matter using technology, or old school tasks) is working with the student who doesn't want to do much -- just get it done. Sadly, no matter what we do, that challenge is always present.

I was excited to find that most items on the checklist are big ideas in my classroom that I am continually using, revising and improving on. There were two concepts on the checklist that I have NEVER tried in my classroom and I would love any/all suggestions below! #3: Blogging.... I have not yet had my students blog, even though I have heard rave reviews of this tool in the classroom. Also, #7: modeling proper social media... as a second grade teacher I have not modeled social media in the classroom because I am unaware of social media sights that are appropriate for ages 7-8 years old. If there are a few, please enlighten me!

Something I feel I do well is I am not scared to try new tech with kids, and modeling trying something new, many times it shows students how to deal with something that is frustrating. Something I would like to work on is using technology to bring guests to our classroom and exposing my students to outside world experiences via guests.

I am very good at stepping out of my comfort zone and trying new things, #9. At the high school level, students surpass my knowledge and discover new ways to do things all the time. From classes I take in the summer, I always have them try. I think I would like to try fewer and get better at understanding. Sometimes the sheer number of "things to do" gets overwhelming. And the students can get confused about what we are using now, where, etc.

Love the list. I do some of the things with my first graders but am leary on how to begin with other items on the list--blogging, and social media. I'm not sure how I would accomplish that with first graders. I would love to attempt "pen" pals through technology. Sadly, the only things I do regularly are the last 3, #8, 9, and 10. But After looking at that SAMR wheel I can see where I can use technology a lot more in my classroom. I feel my students have the opportunity to be very creative and independent when creating a project for a unit we are studying in library. I teach internet safety and digital citizenship to my primary and intermediate classes. The students currently share and critique each others' work through their Google docs so I feel confident about their collaboration and reflection as noted in #3. Next year, I am going to post to my classes' SeeSaw accounts so parents can observe the learning that takes place in our library. Students in my classes do not blog so that's definitely something I need to learn about. I'm learning that the older I get (and believe me I am), the harder it is for me to fulfill #9--stepping out of my comfort zone. But as I near the final two years of my career, that is exactly what I need to do to energize my teaching.

I have taken a picture of this and hope to create one of my own for my first grade classroom. As I go down the list I'm not checking many of these off. My students don't seem to get enough time to ever be creative. It seems we are always nose to desk and work, work, work. Some of these things don't seem to be relevant at my grade level but definitely seem great.

I presently do not have a classroom of my own. However, this checklist will be a great tool for me to use to ensure I am providing my students technology opportunities to enhance their creativity, but to use technology in a safe and responsible way.

these are all things I do at my school. Our District developed a long range plan to really focus on becoming a 21st century learning environment, so these items are key steps in our journey. As we (teachers) get better at creating opportunities for our learners parents and community members are blown away at what our kids are doing- the best part of it is that the kids and their work is doing all of the "speaking" we don't have to tell anybody what we're doing.

I do all of these except for the blogging, as typing in responses to others is painful at 2nd grade (although we do spend one session a week where kids respond to each other's Seesaw posts. #9, the growth one, is important. From Day #1 I put kids in control of learning and then teaching all of us something. The situations may be a bit contrived at the beginning, but soon enough they really ARE teaching me something I didn't know!

I agree with Moriah K., who is concerned about #7 Online Presence/Social Media. I have been a non-participant in Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social media platforms highly intentionally. I have stood firm by my policy through many years of being a Technology teacher. I think the potential for misuse (or harm to the student through a large negative digital footprint) is beyond my ability to convey successfully, though I try. Guidance is extremely important when giving students technology tools to use in the classroom. Students need to understand these tools and what can happen when they are used inappropriately. I whole-heartedly agree with my peers here who want to give their students a greater understanding of digital citizenship. I combine this with my expectations for demonstrating learning using these tools, which is my purpose for assigning digital work. I've used digital portfolios for ten years, and I certainly can see the growth I have had with my own understanding of purpose. SAMR made me think of how much I have learned from the earlier years. My students have opportunities to be creative and can display their work in a variety of ways. I think it is important to teach them about the resources available to them but then to also let them learn what ways they prefer to learn and share. In the same way, I am knowledgeable about the social media resources but choose not to communicate through those mediums as my top choice of communication. I will use them when it is the most efficient resource, but it can also take time away from forms of communication I find valuable such as face to face, phone calls, and notes.

Oh boy, sadly I am lacking on a lot of these items on the list especially the top 5. But I find this list a more useful jumping off point than the ISTE standards. This is something I can easily refer back to and say yes or no if I am implementing. I would like to get my students to a more creative and collaborative place with technology. This checklist would be a good thing to have hanging above my desk! The items on there can easily be forgotten but just as easy to implement if you are reminded on a daily basis. I do allow my students to display their learning in different ways in all subject areas. Many times I will give my students a list of different programs or activities they can pick to show me what they have learned after a unit. One that I do not use is being present online and connecting with others in social media. I think this has a place in the classroom by collaborating with other classrooms like presented in the SAMR video.

I would love for my students to be able to have digital portfolios to add onto throughout the year. I also would love to connect with others virtually and invite people into our classroom virtually. Maybe students from different countries and places in the world???
I feel my students know how to be safe online and how to be good digital citizens. This is something truly important to me because of all the dangers out there while using technology.

I am beginning to learn about incorporating tech into my band/choir classroom. My students do have the opportunity to do a few things on this checklist. They are encouraged to be creative in class all of the time. I know students learn in different ways and I try to teach to their unique learning. I am looking into Google Suite and implementing as much of that as I can. I do want to find apps that can take the place of pen and paper activities.
I invite guests into my room or take my students out to hear and discover new styles of music, see higher levels of performing.

I love this little checklist! It's one of those great tools to have on hand to just stop and see-"I am doing this?" My favorite thing on the list is #10, a great perspective to consider and keep in mind. I do not do very many of the things on this list, but love the idea of them all and think it is feasible to add one a month until I am doing all of them. I'm currently interested in learning more about digital footprints and being good digital citizens. I think that's the best place to start before adding a bunch of new websites/apps/programs to the classroom.

I would say that being an elementary music teacher I give my student's plenty of opportunities to create and display their growth in many ways. I am constantly looking for ways to go beyond my comfort zone and be willing to try new things. I think #4 on the list would be good for my students. It would be great for me to record my students' vocal and playing abilities so I have points of comparison and an option to see and hear their musical growth at a future date. As many others have mentioned #10 is a good way to self reflect on one's teaching. It brings to my mind to not only self reflect with integrating technology into the classroom but also self reflect on my whole classroom enviornment.

I love this checklist. I do not use technology as much as I would like to in my classroom, mainly due to the limited access of it. It requires time to teach the basics of computer use to a third grader before expanding their use of this or any other form of technology. That time is difficult to carve out when we have a limited number of devices with a shared system.
I have added a few new things each year to my instruction involving new tools, for the class to experiment with, while the students are doing research.
When shown the use of shared documents and being able to edit another student's work, my students were quite excited.

I would say that #1 and #4 from the checklist is most commonly found in my classroom through the ClassDojo app. With #1, my students have opportunities to be creative with the video and camera feature. My students create digital journals, teach lessons to their parents and/or peers, and create picture blogs. #4 My students have a digital portfolio that they share their writing, projects, and math lessons with their peers, family, and selves. I would like to focus on doing #2 more often by stepping away from the direct instruction curriculum I have to use in my classroom.

I think this is an interesting checklist. Sometimes we are unable to do some of the things on the checklist due to the programs that are chosen by our district. For example, I was a much more creative teacher than I am now, because I had more time in my classroom to do more creative things before certain programs were adopted. That being said, we do often invite people into our classrooms to share their experiences and talents. This is always a fun time for both kids and teachers alike. I admit technology has become more of a thorn in my side that a help in the classroom due to all of the new restrictions and rules that are now in effect. My thoughts on this are: are we really doing a students a service by changing everything we are doing to a technology base? I´ve read several articles that state that students may possibly learn BETTER with old fashion teaching than new technology learning.

As a PE teacher I am constantly trying to get my students to step out of their comfort zone whether it be a trying to shoot a basketball for the first time or trying to learn a routine for a dance. I am also asking students to reflect on how well they completed the activity.

My students have the opportunity to be creative using technology and display their learning during our novel units. My students do not have digital portfolios, but I do think it would be a fun strategy to incorporate into the learning environment.

I enjoyed learning about the checklist and find that I do many of these without even realizing it. I love to post online and share what our class in learning, celebrating each milestone, birthday or success. I also love to share their work with others through online portfolios and find that the responses are so encouraging to them individually. Although this checklist is exhaustive, I think you'd find many teachers today are already implementing some or most of these concepts already.

This is a great checklist. Technology is almost limitless with what you can have students do with it. As the teacher, though, it can be so overwhelming. I like how the checklist allows us all to start out with a small, manageable task and seek mastery of that task and then move on to something a bit more complex and so on. We all need to feel successful by increments.

Something I do is make sure my students are aware on how to be safe online and how to be good digital citizens. We always cite websites when using them for reports and make sure we give credit where it is due.
One thing I don't do and want to start is having students create digital portfolios. I think they would enjoy it and it would give a great way to show how they are progressing and a way to keep their work besides paper versions.

I am good at modeling how using social media to connect with other and being responsible for my own kids. I encourage student teachers to use creative ways to assess students and come up with alternative assignments. I don't encourage them to connect with the digital world to broaden their knowledge. As a science teacher I make sure my students have every opportunity to be creative and share their reasoning behind their creativity. Each science unit we complete they get to do a final project where they can take any topic we discussed during the unit and dive deeper into their topic and design a way to present their findings to the class. One of the most creative presentations I had was two students baking a Sun Cake and presenting the different layers of the sun while handing out slices. Yum!

I was just reading up on digital portfolios to incorporate into the technology portion of teaching in the library, this is something that I feel will allow me to allow the students more freedom and creativity. I do a fairly good job of modeling a growth mindset and stepping out of my comfort zone. I believe that teachers must model their best practices to the students. Having a growth mindset in education is so vital to be able to learn new ideas and apply them in differing situations. I feel like an area that I can improve upon is the creation of a cumulative type digital portfolio. I have them create digital products/projects but often don't have a system in place to then truly incorporate it into a portfolio. I think this is a valuable goal that will help students throughout their careers.

Checkllist Reflection: I feel that I do most of the items on the checklist as a classroom teacher. I think children learn best in a creative and divergent classroom environment. Relationship and interactivity is key to students enjoying their time in the classroom and I have always made it a point to make my classroom a place I would want to be. If I am excited to be there, the students will as well. If they know I care about their success, they care as well. I do many things on this checklist. I would love to be a student in my classroom. I love technology but have allowed myself to steer away from allowing my 6th graders to use it. I struggled a bit with this checklist, to be honest. I feel my students have opportunities to be creative, to express themselves in different ways... However, I teach part-time kindergarten so I find parts of this list challenging. Not only do time constraints make some of this difficult for me but also the level of student ability as 5/6 year old. I do believe I can give them a good start on many of these skills, but some of these would be much easier with older students (such as individual blogging). I also still feel kids this age need to practice writing with paper and pencil to establish necessary skills (e.g. handwriting, fine motor skills). I love the idea of becoming a more global class through the use of technology and am interested in further development of that this school year.

This gave my an idea to Zoom chat with a parent of one of my students who loves to talk about their 38 year old parrot.

I do about half of these things regularly in my classroom. Teaching preschool, some of these things are possible but not used as often as they would be in older grades. I will work more on integrating more and more technology every year.

As a teacher, I'm always learning and adding to what I do. Some years I seem to do better with the items on the checklist than others. I have several projects where students get to design and present information in a way they choose, I do try to get out of my comfort zone and allow students to show me what they know with technology (they have taught me a lot). However, there are some areas where I can do better. As a Professional Learning Consultant/Coach this past year has taught me to completely transform my use of technology. I've observed teachers across the country re-learning to teach in 100% digital-remote environments. One positive thing that came out of the pandemic is the wide variety of technology based programs I have learned and began using in my classroom. Last year, we were in person learning the whole year but were unable to do field trips. I set up google meets so outside speakers could talk with my class. I incorporate some of these ideas into my classroom (giving an opportunity to be creative, showcasing work in different ways, teaching kids to be responsible online). I would like to improve in using technology more collaboratively. I love the idea to have students create a digital portfolio that would be accessible to their families and other students for discussion/comment. Inviting virtual guests into the classroom is also a great idea!

I believe that I do allow students to be creative in my class and show their learning in several different ways. Something I have not done yet is doing more growth mindset things in the classroom and connecting with educators outside of my school. I am starting out in a new grade this year, and am trying to start out just connecting with my mentor, etc but would love to branch out more as the school year goes on.

I feel pretty good about my classroom structure after reading through this checklist! I allow a LOT of creativity in my STEM classroom, where I have no set expectations for any student. I allow their creations to speak for themselves without sticking to a concrete rubric. Most of my students have found new confidence in themselves since I let them take charge of their learning and decide on their own final products. When we were using Google Classroom, that was their opportunity to showcase their work digitally, and engage in online classroom discussions, similar to blogs, monitored by me. One thing I could do better on is inviting experts into my classroom. I find it hard to do with our schedule the way it is, but I still could find a way to make it happen more often. I'll continue to work on that. I am looking forward to using YouTube interviews and specials as "guest speakers," though. That's the easiest way for me to get a guest speaker for all 430 students that I see every 10 days.

I try to do a lot of these things in my classroom, but number 9 resonates with me personally. I teach growth mindset from the very first day of school and it is especially important when we move to high technology use, some students get frustrated easily when we try new apps, even I do, and it is great to always be able to fall back on Growth Mindset. The idea of a digital portfolio is very interesting and exciting to me, I worked under a teacher who let her students write a blog every friday--definitely something I want to pursue in my classroom one day.

I WOULD want to be a student in my classroom! I am so glad that this was on the list and should be the first on the list. I always planned my classroom the way that I would have wanted to learn. We used wiggle chairs, tables, the floor, couches, yoga balls and mats, the white board, iPads, laptops and even standard paper and pencil. Students were allowed to use the method that works best for them. In my small rural classroom, it worked amazing. It was just very difficult, and in the end impossible, to get the tiny school board on the same page.

As a substitute teacher, I will sometimes completely run out of things to do. Sometimes the teacher I am subbing for doesn't give me enough to do with the students. I usually take this as a chance to inspire learning among the kids by pointing them towards a fun interactive online activity they could do online. Sometimes Ill ask the kids to make inspirational posters on canva.com. Other times I will have tell them to build their dream home at homestyler.com. Its a fun way to kill time!

I really liked the checklist and the graphics it contained. It reminded me of the things to do in the classroom. I always allowed my students to be creative and to help one another.
