In grief, Mrs. White urged Mr. White to use the second wish to bring Herbert back. That night, loud knocking was heard at the door, but fearing what might have returned, Mr. White used the last wish to cancel the second one. The knocking stopped and the door was empty, leaving the White family with deep regret over the heavy price of tampering with fate.
