Whether it is film, literature, or music, coming of age stories attract us all. The uncertainty of the future, new feelings, new experiences, as frightening as they might make us feel, also make us feel alive and connected to others. The characters in these books will resonate a sense of belonging in the lives of students. Readers will be able to identify with the characters and see themselves. Growing up is hard and that is why it is important to find novels that will connect with our young readers.
Coming of age, what a beautiful time to be alive, isn’t it?

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
The brilliance of this coming-of-age novel lies in the fact that it's told from a child's point-of-view, through the eyes of Scout. Scout makes observations about the racial divide and injustices during the 1930's. Scout's views are objective because what she sees through her visual lens, an adult would avoid or sugarcoat. The theme of coming-of-age follows the Finch children throughout the entirely of the novel, especially Scout. Her father, Atticus, must make hard decisions to prove that a black man, Tom Robinson, is innocent of the raping of a young white woman, Mayella Ewell. The prejudice of people during this time is unbelievable and lies circulate around the town about the incident. Scout's character grows throughout the novel because she is viewing the trial with innocent eyes and not tainted. As a reader you can identify that by the end of the novel she is seeing the world with more mature eyes, gaining compassion and understanding of human flaws and weaknesses. A connection can be made because this coming-of-age novel is personal and will allow its readers to identify with the characters. With this theme, connection is what it is all about!

https://www.amazon.com/Kill-Mockingbird-Harper-Lee/dp/0060935464/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?keywords=to+kill+a+mockingbird&qid=1574171239&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUE5UVgzUllRTFNTMTkmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTA4ODY5OTIzVUNCM1BZTlVCUkpYJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTA2MDA1NjExR1M2NllUUlQ2WDc0JndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==

Ages: 9+

A very-short and quick read for our young readers. This novel revolves around the mindset of the main character, Alice. It revolves around Alice's emotions and the tiny altering events that shape what's going on in our little one's mind! Alice is taken to her favorite spot in Florida for her birthday every year. but this year half of the vacationers (who she thinks of as family) will not be there for her birthday. Alice also meets her favorite aunt's boyfriend who has a 6 year old daughter who she's not so sure of. Through the eyes of a 10 year old, Alice starts to feel lost in a setting where she would always find comfort and joy. The changes that she is encountering during her vacation is not something Alice was mentally and emotionally prepared for. Alice just wants a perfect 10th birthday. You can start to see the change in Alice's character when she starts to realize that she is not going to have the picture perfect birthday she had pictured before life handed her a new card. Alice starts to search for something more than just a perfect birthday. A simple story but one that shows the complexity of change in the mind of a little girl.

https://www.amazon.com/Junonia-Kevin-Henkes/dp/0061964190/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=junonia&qid=1574299084&sr=8-1

Ages: 10+

A MUST READ!!!

A memoir about a young Pakistani girl who witnesses the takeover of her country by the Taliban when she was just 10 years old. Growing up Malala knew peace, then an invasive takeover by the Taliban transformed her peaceful town into a terrorist stomping ground. The writing in this memoir captures every step of her hardships, fear, loss, terror, hurt, motivation, inspiration, miracles, and hope. A young girl who suffers a gun shot wound at the hands of the Taliban uses her situation to rise and become one of THE most influential symbols for allegiances against violence, against terrorism. This memoir hits straight to the heart of its readers because Malala is a powerful, beautiful soul that rises like a phoenix to showcase her resistance against a powerful tyranny of Taliban members.
If there is any memoir that examples coming-of- age, this one is it! Students will be able to see through Malala's visual lens to empathize what it was like to be here during a time where hope was lost.
https://www.amazon.com/Am-Malala-Education-Changed-Readers/dp/0316327913/ref=asc_df_0316327913/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312090341742&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=7067112685591690250&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9005275&hvtargid=pla-431136936210&psc=1

Ages: 9+

Have you ever had to isolate yourself from the world because they hated you?! They hated you so much that they wanted to kill you. Well, this non-fiction novel is just that. A story about a girl, a Jewish girl named Anne Frank who was hiding in a secret annex in an old office building with her family completely shut off from the world. In 1942 Nazi Germany raided villages and homes tearing families apart to create an Aryan race which did not include Jewish families like Anne's. The novel revisits Anne's diary where the reader becomes aware of her struggles, irritations, passions, and her explicit dreams. Anne's spirit can be felt through her diary entrees. This is sad coming-to-age experience but one to be learned from. Students can further their understand of what it was like for young children like Anne by pairing this book with the article, COURAGE IN DENMARK: RESISTANCE TO THE NAZIS IN WWII by TAMAÑO DE LETRA.
This is powerful one- bring the tissues!

https://www.amazon.com/Anne-Frank-Turtleback-Library-Binding/dp/0881035416/ref=asc_df_0881035416/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312021455910&hvpos=1o3&hvnetw=g&hvrand=11130235605007188703&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9005275&hvtargid=pla-569705255215&psc=1

When Marian Sang by Pam Munoz Ryan Pictures by Brian Selznick

Ages: 8+

The combination of Ryan's lyrics and Selznick's pictures brings to life one of the most harmonious and important voices in our history! Growing up during pre Civil Rights Era, Marian knew one thing for certain that she was going to let her singing voice be heard. As a young girl, her parents encouraged her to use her voice in the church choirs. When Marian tried to apply to a music school, she was told the school does not take "colored". Marian was not surprised by the prejudices of the times towards black people but she did wonder why people were so narrow-minded. Even though Marian was denied several times to prove that her voice was like no other due to her skin color, her character carried on and grew stronger through these challenges. The woman who emerges at the end of the book is courageous and through her dignity Marian shines all the way to the Lincoln Memorial to perform in front of many audiences. It is such a beautiful story of a person who defeated the prejudices of the time era and did it with grace and respect!
https://www.amazon.com/When-Marian-Sang-Recital-Anderson/dp/0439269679

The Mighty Miss Malone by Christopher Paul Curtis

Ages: 13+

This novel can appeal to younger audiences such as 10+. I have decided to put this for an older audience because of some of the content which can be sensitive for some of the readers. There are violent scenes that take place so parents and young readers should be advised.

She may be little, but she is fierce!

Christopher Paul Curtis is one of my favorite children's book authors. While choosing this book I was going into the reading knowing that there will be difficult topics to discuss. What I did find a spunky, fierce little girl character named, Deza Malone. She is a daughter of a black man who cannot find work after The Great Depression hit in 1936. The depression shakes everything out of order in the life of Deza and her family. She loses her dad, lives in a place called Hoover Town ( town built during the Great Depression by the homeless in the United States), witnesses violent attacks, struggles to maintain proper hygiene, etc. The stricken life of poverty is shown throughout the entire book, your heart cannot help but to feel terrible for the Malone family. It is Deza who brings its hope and brightness to the terrible circumstances her family has suffered. She is the heroine of the story and her character grows so much from beginning to end. A child whose teeth are rotting out of her mouth, still finds hope in becoming something more than the foul smell that reeks from her mouth. This story is one-of-a-kind and brings forth the trouble people faced, specifically black people, during The Great Depression. As an adult reading this book, you see the coming-of-age theme through Deza's experiences and hardships; she never loses hope. What an eye-opener for the reading audience of this novel.

https://www.amazon.com/Mighty-Miss-Malone-Christopher-Curtis/dp/0440422140

Heartwrenching

Ages: 13+

Your life and can be taken away from you before you even know it's gone. Life is not predictable. At times, life causes unbearable pain from situations that are completely out of our control. Mockingbird is a novel that tells about a tragic school shooting event that takes place at Virginia Dare Middle School where two students and one teacher were killed and it’s aftermath. The main character Caitlin, who is 10 years old and has Asperger's Syndrome, lost her brother in the school shooting. As a reader, you can feel the ripple effect of devastation that has been cast on the community and Caitlin's family. The novel depicts the different ways of grief and tragedy are processed through Caitlin who has Asperger's. Her father, who is extremely stricken with grief it disables him from functioning. This novel reflects the theme coming-of-age through the different characters and how they are trying to overcome grief (father), develop empathy (Caitlin), and show tolerance towards other people (community). By the end, the reader will see that there is a moment of hope and light from such a tragic, realistic event. Also, the novel's topics are sensitive and should be discussed with students before reading.
https://www.amazon.com/Mockingbird-Kathryn-Erskine-2010-04-15/dp/B01FIX6LTM/ref=sr_1_2?gclid=Cj0KCQiAiNnuBRD3ARIsAM8Kmlsf42AUWb_Ci9lofO1WPjLoRQSjEsmgzB7EkcvqxGoFaHhpPorKVs4aAjW_EALw_wcB&hvadid=241928903459&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=9005192&hvnetw=g&hvpos=1t1&hvqmt=e&hvrand=6483733278158596753&hvtargid=kwd-26637567694&hydadcr=22567_10346631&keywords=mockingbird+kathryn+erskine&qid=1574357570&sr=8-2

Ages: 10+

If you are looking for characters that will resonate with your preteen/teen students, look no farther than, Raymie Nightingale by Kate DiCamillo. This story revolves around a young girl who is desperately trying to survive in a cruel world. She was abandoned by her father who left with no warning to run off with a dental hygienist. Raymie is heartbroken and is tainted by her father's actions. She fills her head with false hope that her father will return one day if she wins a competition. Besides the abandonment of her father Raymie is just trying to make sense of it all and it seems that a lot of the adults in this novel are not trustworthy and make bad choices. Raymie's character brings to light that friendships can heal heartbreak and having the courage to say "I am better than that". This coming-of-age tackles the hard challenges that some children like Raymie face on a daily basis. It gives children hope that a character like themselves can defeat the odds that have been handed to them. The messages are clear and will uplift its readers to say, "I am better than that".

https://www.amazon.com/Raymie-Nightingale-Kate-DiCamillo/dp/0763681172

Ages: 14+

Classical Novel Alert!

This is a complex novel that enters the world of a young teenage boy by the name of Holden Caulfield. The young readers will be able to identify Holden's resistance of wanting to grow up and become mature. Holden who has been expelled from school and goes through a series of experiences all reinforcing his sense of alienation in a superficial world where he struggles with the coming of age questions of who am I, where do I belong, and what is my purpose. It is evident that he fears change and his destructive behavior is a result of it. Holden makes up illusions to make adulthood seem nothing but terrible. In a dream Holden fantasizes about the catcher in the rye: he imagines childhood as an idyllic field of rye in which children frolic and play. They have no true responsibility. He imagines adulthood, for the children of this world, is equivalent to death. There is so much to say about this book because the themes are so intense and would take many platforms to explain.
The readers might not get a warm-fuzzy feeling at the end of this novel but they will identify with the coming-of-age theme through the transformation of thoughts by the main character, Holden Caulfield about adulthood.
https://www.amazon.com/Catcher-Rye-J-D-Salinger/dp/0316769177/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=the+catcher+in+the+rye&qid=1574380418&s=books&sr=1-1

Sixteen years on the streets and you see a lot. But all the wrong sights, not the things you want to see.”
― S.E. Hinton

One of the greatest novels ever written that portrays the theme of coming-of-age in every single turn of the page! Ponyboy specifically is the prime example of a character that goes through this specific theme. Ponyboy is stuck between both social classes the greasers and the Socs. He just wants to be accepted, loved, and understood. Tragedy and violence lead to confusion and depression, anger, but finally, creativity as Ponyboy tries to capture his friends and his story in words, creating this novel.

https://www.amazon.com/Outsiders-S-Hinton/dp/014240733X

Ages: 10+

Poetry adds so much emotion to the words on the page. Its young readers will be able to feel something that they may not be familiar with through the verses of this novel. Ha' is a Vietnamese refugee who leaves Saigon due to war to come to America for a new life. The retelling of events by Ha' portrays the theme of coming-of-age as she vividly details the struggles of immigration and assimilating into a new culture. All within a year Ha's character transforms into a completely different child due to the experiences she goes through. One of her strongest qualities was her ability to dream and because she dreamed so vividly she was able to overcome the hardships she had to face. This is a great novel for students to analyze the theme of coming-of-age.

https://www.amazon.com/sk=inside+out+and+back+again&gclid=Cj0KCQiAiNnuBRD3ARIsAM8KmlsFGyOOycS24M8rop5v7SN5UoLnJaxP6UwbRzICd2i5W3xO0BhFGfgaApoUEALw_wcB&hvadid=241896449886&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=9005192&hvnetw=g&hvpos=1t1&hvqmt=e&hvrand=14296458165245324595&hvtargid=kwd-29127395379&hydadcr=22565_10346486&tag=googhydr-20&ref=pd_sl_6d29fetjb6_e

Ages: 8+

This is an eye opener for all young readers who have never read about Syrian refugees that have tried to escape the horrors of a war-torn country. The main character 14-year-old Nadia is fleeing Syria to go to Turkey to find refuge from war. While escaping Nadia and her family are torn apart by a bomb and Nadia finds herself alone and displaced. The terrifying realization that a 14 year old is venturing a war stricken area by herself is devastating. Nadia finds herself linking with other children and adults who are displaced like her because of war. There's not time to be a kid. This coming-of-age novel is about the hard truths that war brings upon its people, specifically children. Through it all, Nadia's character grows in compassion, strength, courage, and love. War will not break her.

https://www.amazon.com/sk=Escape+from+Aleppo&ref=nb_sb_noss
