The article “The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me” by Native American author Sherman Alexie, described how he learned to read Superman comics at 3 years old. His father’s voraciousness for reading books inspired Alexie’s own passion. Their love for books deviated from the stereotype of uneducated, unmotivated Indians. Alexie used the platform he created to inspire future generations of reservation children to be more involved in their academic education through reading and writing.

Alexie Sherman learned to read and write through a superman comic book at the age of 3. In kindergarten, he was already reading Grapes of Wrath while other students read Dick and Jane. His father, who was an avid reader of any book he could find, purposely went to Catholic school to strive to be better. His father's love of reading inspired Alexie to follow in his dad's footsteps. Indians were not expected to surpass low intellectual expectations. But Alexie broke that stereotype by excelling in school and earning a scholarship to college. His perseverance and determination led to his success as a well known author and to inspire future generations of reservation children to be more involved in their academic education through reading and writing.

The author of "The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me", Sherman Alexie, at the age of 3 learned to read from a Superman comic book as an Indian boy living on a reservation in the state of Washington. His parents were middle class by reservation standards and did not have a stable paycheck, so they had to rely on government surplus food. Alexie's father was an avid reader and filled their house with books on various topics. This devotion and love for his father influenced Alexie's love of books and, ultimately, his education. Alexie believed reading at an early age would normally have made him a prodigy, but because he was an Indian boy, he was considered an oddity. Because of stereotypes and low expectations, at school a smart Indian was feared and ridiculed by Indian classmates who never showed their proficiency to non-Indians but did show their capabilities at home around family.
