This trip actually requires 2 different trains– the first leg is taking a high speed train out of the Rome to Naples (Napoli Centrale station).

The second train leaves from Napoli Centrale (underground platforms of Circumvesuviana commuter rail) to Pompei.

This is a scam (mostly by gypsies) to force you to tip. If you are fine tipping, go for it, but be warned they are not the most upstanding characters.

6. Watch your bags as the train arrives and departs the station. 
Just incase somebody tries to hop on and steal something at the last minute.

8. Bring a portable luggage scale, especially if you are traveling via discount European airlines. 
They are serious about bag weight.

10. Always carry cash. 
Most places will not let you use your debit or credit card for smaller purchases and restaurants don’t split bills.

Rome
29. Start at the Roman Forum instead of the Colosseum. 
There is rarely a line at the Forum. Pick up or purchase your tickets there and when you are done, you can skip the line at the Colosseum, since you will already have your ticket.

30. Sneak into St. Peter's Basilica (Shhh!). 
If you are not on a guided tour but want to visit the basilica without waiting in another 3 hour line, you can "sneak" in. There are two ways to exit the Sistine Chapel (the end of the Vatican Museum tour). If you take the door in the back right corner (if you back is to the Last Judgment) you will head straight to the church without exiting the complex. This is how all the guides do it, so just blend in and if anyone asks, say you’re on a tour.

32. Skip the Vatican Museum line. 
If you find yourself in Rome without a reservation for the Vatican Museums and facing the typical 3-hour line, don’t worry you can pay (double) to skip the line. Find a shady looking gentleman hawking tours and a “skip the line” pass. These companies reserve blocks of entrance times and then sell them for double. It stinks that you will have to pay double, but it is still better than wasting 3 hours of your day. If you don’t want the tour, tell them you just want to skip the line.

34. Drink the water. 
The public drinking fountains throughout the city spew fresh spring water that is still brought to the city by the ancient aqueducts. The water is delicious, clean, and free!

"We just got back from a week in Praiano and the Onda Verde is somewhat isolated---will you have a car? For a first trip to the AC you are better off in Positano. We had an apartment for a week and took the SITA busses to get around"
Positano if you want the resorty atmosphere, lots of high end shops with clothes, art, jewelry. Lots of restaurants, nightlife and lots of tourists. Very beautiful town, nice boat options for getting around. 

Praiano if you want a quiet, locals town. No real shopping to speak of, limited night life and fewer restaurants. I've stayed in Praiano twice and loved it. Il Brace is a very good restaurant. Lovely local residents.

The village of Priano is between Amalfi and Positano. There is really not much to do there at all since it is mainly residential.
We frequently take the public boats from Amalfi to Positano. The ride is beautiful and you don't fight the traffic on the very interesting, winding, roads. We have also taken the boats to Capri and Sorrento from there.

We got back recently and stayed 5 nights in Amalfi and I think it's a good compromise between very crowded, very touristy Positano, and much smaller and quieter Praiano. I was very happy about our choice of location. 

I would stay in Praiano and go to Amalfi and Ravello on a day trip. 5) Arrive by ferry
While the bus is convenient and cheap, arriving by ferry will give you incredible views of the cities. Amalfi, Capri (of course, it's an island), Sorrento, and Positano are all connected by ferry.

6) Reserve your ferry tickets
It is best to reserve your ferry tickets ahead of time, especially in the summer months (a.k.a. high season). You can reserve ferries and see the timetables here.

12) Rent a boat to tour around Capri
This is an absolute must in Capri! It is the best way to see the gorgeous grottos, famous Faraglioni rocks and, of course, the blue grotto. I recommend Motoscafisti Di Capri.

15) Visit the Blue Grotto when it's "closed" (before 9 am or after 4 pm)
You can do this by grabbing a taxi from Anacapri and asking for the “Grotta Azzurra.” The taxi will take you to a set of stairs that lead down into the ocean and to the opening of the grotto. But only do this if you are an excellent swimmer and knowledgable about ocean currents and tides.

19) Save money and picnic on the beach
One of my favorite things to do is to have a picnic lunch on the beach in Positano. The nearby shop "Vini e Panini" sells panini, wine, prosecco, water, fresh fruit, and snacks, everything you need for a picnic.
