This article shares the idea that being an American is more than to just live in the United States. Being American is about wanting the best life has to offer. Being american is about always wanting better for yourself and never accepting your current situation as "good enough." In the United States we have the chance to climb the social/economical hierarchy: to take advantage of that is to be American.

I would like to focus on the first art of this article where the author talks about the literal definition of being an American. Being an American means that you obtain citizenship of the United States. With your citizenship, you get more though. When you are a citizen of the United States, you are ensured the protection guaranteed by the constitution. Being a citizen and accepting the philosophy underlying the constitution is what makes an American.

Being American is all about diversification. When America started as the 13 colonies, the big thing that pulled them away from looking like a miniature England was the large amount of widely different cultures. Living with and embracing these several different cultures is what makes an American. America is "The Melting Pot."
