This is due to several different factors, including:

Symptoms masked in childhood due to protective influences (parental organization or guidance)

Misdiagnosis with another disorder such as depression or anxiety

In several cases, women show more difficulty with attention, while boys often have more hyperactive symptoms which are easier to identify from an outside perspective. In both ways they increase the amount of neurotransmitters in the brain.

Non-stimulants

Non-stimulant medications for ADHD include antidepressant medications and previously used antihypertensive medications. They are typically used for ADHD when patients cannot take stimulant medications or have not benefited from stimulant medications. They work to increase the neurotransmitters in the brain by inhibiting their reuptake.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a practical, short-term therapy model that looks at the way our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are shaped by both our own preconceived notions and our environment. The goal of CBT is to help the individual learn to recognize irrational thought patterns that lead to negative behavioral outcomes, and construct new, rational thought patterns in their place.
