On Cara's point of view she describes how the workers put in the carpet inside her house. " The men work, laying mint green carpeting over clean beige padding. Think. Lush. Camouflage. I sit on a top stair unseen (Hopkins 4)." This helps the reader imagine the workers putting in the mint green carpet and help them vision seeing Cara at the top of the stair case.
Another example of a literary device would be a simile. "But earning that crown demands more than skill. What it requires are arms like Mark McGwire's(Hopkins 26)." Sean describes what he needs in order to be successful in baseball and what his goal is. He is comparing his arms to the arms he wants to have in the future.
Foreshadowing is very frequent as well. "Come on," she says. "He won't hurt you, I won't let him(Hopkins 280)." This shows in the future that her father might not be the nicest guy or accepting person. Later on, Andre finds out that Jenna's dad is racist and that's what she was scared of.
The second to last example is a metaphor. Kendra compares her memory to a razor blade. "I loved him so much, and the memoryis a new razor blade. To sharp to feel it's slice(Hopkins 309)."
Finally there's another example of a simile. "Its name is paranoia, and it spreads like an oil spill, there in the shadows, chokes your humanity.Threatens your soul(Hopkins 325)." This compares paranoia and oils spills and how they have the same concept. How they spread and how it affects you.

This is significant in the story because her father gave it to her when she was 15. Once she gets a boyfriend she finds herself constantly looking at it. "I couldn't help it, I constantly find myself thinking about this ring and looking at it. The trust I have broken from my father(Hopkins 400)." Another example is Andres older brother. His family uses Andres older brother as a symbol of what Andre should be. "They always bring him up, what i should be and how to be like him. How successful he was as a african american male(Hopkins 355)." Throughout the story they always compare Andre and his brother Kenny. Using Kenny as a symbol of what Andre needs to be.
The picture is a purity ring. It symbolizes throughout the story multiple times. Mainly because after she makes bad decisions she always thinks about it. She always finds herself looking at it. It causes her stress and makes her disappointed in herself every time she thinks about it. Finally in the end she just takes it off to forget about it.

Most Important
-When Cara gets raped by her boyfriend at the times Sean.
-Cara ends up falling for girls instead because she feels they wont hurt her.
-Jenna and Andre start dating each other.
-Jennas father is raciest but they still continue to date.
-Kendra has a nose job.
- Sean sees Cara and Dani doing stuff so he takes a picture and exposes her.
-Cara then finds out about the pictures on Facebook ad Youtube.
-Sean get arrested
-He finds out about his baseball career
-Cara's brother kills himself.
These reasons are the top 10 most important. Reason is because they all show an example of pressuring and expectations. In the end it all hurt them. If they wern't pressured in to who they should be, then their wouldn't be such problems with all of them.
This picture is relevant to the story because it shows how they all are suppose to be perfect. Only thing is there not. No one can be perfect. When people finally become fed up, they crack and break. They end up doing things like self-harm and have depression. Then like Cara's brother, they can commit suicide.
