Many of you might think that clocks are a luxury for the rich, that they aren't necessary, that you get up with the sun and go home when you run out of oil, but you good sir are very wrong. Thanks to this new patented shelf clock mechanism we are now able to mass produce something that is often thought to be unnecessary, making it easy to not have to guess when to be at an important meeting.

Clocks would not be as popular, and would be much more expensive had it not been for Eli Terry. He had revolutionized an invention that was thought to be only for the rich, and made a process that produced thousands in one year. An accomplishment that would not even normally be achieved in a clock makers entire career. He had heard of a man called Eli Whitney, and he then used many of his ideas as a stepping stone for his own ideas. He used machines that were powered by water and could make clocks be produced much faster. He then hired two men, Seth Thomas and Silas Hoadley to create 4,000 clocks for two Connecticut businessmen. This was an insane number for anyone to accomplish in an entire lifetime. However, they got it done in just three years! And once it had been completed Seth Thomas and Silas Hoadley bought out Eli and allowed him to retire.

However he felt that he shouldn’t retire and decided to keep inventing and he had created a shelf clock and went off to invent 8 more additions to clock designs. His mass production methods were so successful that he was able to build 12,000 clock in one single year before his death. Before he had officially retired 1833 he had turned his clock business to his son, as well as other family members. His ideas for clocks was so successful that he had a total of 10 patents under his belt before his death in 1852.

We use clocks every single day in our lives, whether this be for waking up, going to work, making sure you aren’t running late, making sure you get to bed at a good time, or just because you’re curious. The point is that we use them every single day, all the time. They were once thought to be just for the rich, that was until Eli Terry made them in the thousands. But, without the concept of time we would often be lost every day. Many things wouldn’t work at all, like computers, because they run off of the concept of time.
