I also wonder what this looks like for the special education department? Can we find a way to use our ideas and strengths together to create norms, expectations, lessons, etc as a whole? This way we do not always feel like an island off on our own.

I noticed how PLCs are thought about as a school-wide or district effort, much more than a meeting, and how the collaborative teams or content levels are considered building blocks of the PLC. I also noticed how a collaborative effort is essential to systemic change for all students, not just within the classrooms of the collaborative teams.

A PLC is not a meeting "to have a meeting." It's not a checklist. It is the "process to help teachers collaborate and share ideas about how to better reach all students" (I Love Public Schools, 2017). I really like that definition because while one teacher may not understand how to reach a lower level, another may have a great strategy. PLCs is a great opportunity that is not usually provided. We can share data and ask for strategies on how to reach the struggling students; that time can also be used to plan for students that are bored (exceeding the lesson).

I noticed the teachers in the Sioux PLC the teachers relied on their strengths and were open for growth. This willingness to be flexible is essential for growth. They also show vulnerabilty by being honest about what students are struggling with, but do not blame it on the student. This is something that can happen, especially in middle school, letting circumstances dictate success or not doing everything we can to reach a student.

The shared sense of pride they each felt in working through the process and how they welcomed the opportunity to collaborate with each other. I did not notice any "egos" in the room, each professional was focused on the process and the community that they were building. I think a lot of people think of PLC as just a meeting to meet, however, it is a tool to be able to look at data to be able to look at student progress, to look at how each teacher teaching the same grade level and the same subject might present the information differently, and how their student may be thriving And what can be done better and maybe some adjustments as far as instruction. I believe PLC‘s are very important if done properly and teachers want to work together as a cohesive group and not alone.

In both PLC examples shown, the teachers were well prepared to discuss what was happening in their classrooms with their students. I also noticed that the Palmetto PLC was actively breaking down the assessment that they did to determine exactly where a breakdown in understanding happened. They looked at the quality of the question they asked and not the ability of the students and blaming them for getting it wrong. In both examples there was professional respect and genuine commitment to the greater good for their students.

From the article, I noticed that two key parts of PLCs are their ongoing collaboration and broad inclusion of educators. Yes, PLCs may be practically played out in smaller groups. However, the article shifted the focus on PLCs from a repetitive Monday morning meeting to a mindset of collaboration among the broader educator community. Additionally, I noticed the data-driven focus of the educators in the PLC meeting and the freedom with which they shared their collected data.

Per most of education, I noticed that ultimately, it is about improvement. The PLC is for similarly-minded educators to team up and become the best teachers, with the best curriculum possible, in order to impact the students in the best way possible. We can bounce ideas off each other and talk about went right and wrong during different classes.

Do the teachers slow down to wait for teacher B to catch up in order to keep consistency in all of the PLC classrooms?

This is a distant concept for me, as I am the only Ag Science teacher in the building. It does inspire me to work more closely with the other middle school Ag Science teachers in the district to be more specific with the content we teach when we meet as a PLC. I think that would provide consistency throughout the district and ease-of-mind for each Ag Science teacher. -K. Martin

In PLCs, teachers were exceptionally well-engaged for the PLC meeting, creating a cohesive environment where everyone could share what does and does not work in their classrooms. Each teacher was given ample time to speak and respond, ensuring attentive listening and mutual respect. By utilizing collaborative PLCs, we can exchange best practices and identify areas needing improvement, driving essential changes for our students. This process also helps to build a strong sense of instructional community within the school. This definitely is something I’d loved to be apart of instead of being told I’m wrong or not listened to like at my previous district. PLCs are formed so all parties involved are seen as equal which helps lead to the one common goal of it all: the betterment of our students.

In a PLC I also believe that it is a beneficial tool to connect teachers and aide in fulfilling the transformation of schools. Collaboration always leads to great knowledge being gained by those involved. It also offers a space to bring together individuals in similar experiences to problem solve and create plans and strategies that would have been more difficult to create independently. The more we learn together the better we can become as a team!

At the beginning when the student could share what areas she felt like she was struggling provided insight to the teacher. PLC needs team members to be committed to each other and the process. It creates a space to be open to ideas, adapt to change, and stay focused on student data. I feel like PLCs support our transformational non-negotiables that will elevate our school this coming year.

Even when everyone didn't agree, they all felt heard enabling them to continue working toward their goal.
