PP needs to focus more on intention and relation to media.
This is tough to do - how do you connect "acrylic" to your message. Watercolor connecting to environmental conservation. 
PP  amount of  process and depth required. Just capturing with color wheels and test samples is not sufficient etc.  
PP what is lens based is Iphones not really meeting criteria.
PP challenge to score well in lens media.

Be sure to analyze the artwork rather than simply describing it.
Things to Avoid: using their own personal opinion, simply including a bibliography, sloppy referencing, unreliable  sources, bullet points without a thorough analysis, font smaller than 12 point, Instagram artists who are not well known,
Use subject specific language and appropriate adjectives, go into depth.
Focus more on the artwork vs. the artist. 
Connect formal qualities to the cultural context.

CS. 5 suggestions 
  1. Give the students the document that is all laid out. (where is this document?) SLIDESHOW INThinking.net AMBER will share to Padlet
  2. Make the kids do good research on their chosen artist (no Instagram) They must use valid websites and articles. 
  3. Last 3-5 slides are the ONLY slides that have to have the comparative study. 
  4. Summer work for Juniors: choose Artists and Artwork over the summer before he gets them as a junior (HL y1 (16-17). (Vandams). Do not pick the most obvious. Begin with 6 artists. (Pre-work to prepare the students). Take turns sharing the artists that they find the most interesting. This is all done in their sketchbooks. As a class, go over a few artists over the next few weeks and they choose. Who is that artist and the art pieces that work. Handout that helps them to compare 2 portrait artists. Then landscape. Then the teacher picks one artist and they choose work that matches. Goal: Conference with students to make sure that they meet all parts of the rubrics. 
  5. Find 5 artists in one week and 10 works. (50 works of art) Then, narrow it down (2 artists with 5 works each. Then narrow it down to the 3 artworks they will use.) Junior students do the research so older students use the materials. How does it relate to your body of work? Is the thread strong? 
  6. 11th year they are researching artists. The summer before, they come in with 2 artists and a paragraph why. November rough draft. Final in January. (Done mid-January in y11). Lori Raper. 

PP. 5 suggestions  
  1. Follow the mark bands. 
  2. Sketchbooks assignments (scaffolding) 2nd semester of y11 to y12. At the end of every semester: semester portfolio reveal. 4 pages, then next semester will be 8 pages. Everything is saved on Google Drive. XAVIER
  3. Juniors (still life setup) Instruments, clock, sea grape, etc. Students draw,take pictures at different angles. They then brainstorm (thumbnail sketches). Students may choose to stay with the image or go with a different route. Maybe they are interested in instruments or Greek Culture. Research of other artists, then they create and make their own. Bike, skeleton. VANDAMS
  4. Guide them in semester 1 Y11. Drawing, printmaking, ceramics, 2 artists in that medium, what message and content and symbols do they want. They take photos every day. For each project, they need a completed process portfolio. LORI
  5. ONE DAYS: Tar paper and oil Pastel. Subject (eye). Figure out how to use those materials to make the eye. Let them play. Then they can expand with it on their own. XAVIER
  6. Experiment with the COLUMNS! 3 media! Print it and put it up in the classroom. Students should experiment with all 3 of those columns. E.g. Pastel in one week. Then another medium in the next week. 


EX. 5 suggestions 
  1. Encourage students to just keep experimenting and trying different mediums. They need to avoid comparing. TECHNICAL SKILL and COMPETENCE are pushed in the Exhibition. VANDAMS
  2. Do not have to follow the 3 columns for the exhibition! Give themes such as Social Issues and students build from that. 
  3. 2 phases: compiling the body of work and the exhibition itself. They MUST put their best, most confident work forward. XAVIER
  4. CRITIQUE is so IMPORTANT! Verbal critique is so crucial. Feedback Suggestions with symbols: The Green Triangle means what they can change. Look into different symbols with meaning for the students to give feedback. (Pass the feather around and all can talk except for the artist). There is so much growth.  VANDAMS 2 Critiques a grading period. This helps to build confidence. 
  5. Do an individual show in APRIL (flyer and treats) Parents and students come to watch. This gives them a chance to make any changes. 
  6. Set Up? Lights? A toast to the seniors leaving us. If possible, organize to have the EX at a gallery outside of the school. VIRTUAL: Google Slide show and presented it to a virtual audience. Q&A. XAVIER had students create a gallery from their homes and a live conversation. ZOOM LIVE (parents loved this). Judges were present and art was displayed. 
  7. Connections from other artists to find galleries for senior showing. Tell them that they are finishing as Artists! A social tradition. Kids provide snacks. Music playing (live).
