In his essay, Brian Doyle emphasizes the idea that people will choose different ways of living their lives, but regardless, all people should learn not to take advantage of time with their loved ones, because life is unexpected and you may have less time than you think. Doyle supports this idea by informing the audience of the different lives of certain animals then comparing their lives to the different ways people choose to live theirs. Doyle's purpose is to convince readers to take into consideration the way they're choosing to spend precious time in order to urge them to spend their time wisely and live their lives without regret. He establishes a formal, insightful relationship with his audience of those who may need help choosing a path in life.

Doyle uses logos as a big part in his essay, giving adequate facts about animals the reader may have not known before reading, for instance, he wrote "They can dive at sixty miles an hour. They can fly backwards. They can fly more than five hundred miles without pausing to rest," and also facts on the blue whale and tortoise's. He provides even more facts on an organism's heart, and how there can be different chambers depending on each class of animal.

Doyle uses many metaphors in his essay, for instance, the hummingbird and the blue whale, to show that no matter how big, small, or different things are from each other, they all have the same characteristic of scarred hearts. He also hints that there are different ways for people to live their lives, using heartbeat speeds of different animals as his comparison. His sentence and paragraphs are structured strategically to help the reader be able to gather all the information that he is throwing at them.

One organizational pattern Doyle uses is separating the each animal and their facts and metaphors. He begins with the hummingbird and the information on its life and the function of its heart as well as the comparison to human life. He then moves to the whale, then the turtles and reptiles with their own specific facts and metaphors. By using these separations, he is utilizing his metaphors to illustrate different ways people could choose to live their lives.

The author is creating a melancholy but informative tone for the audience. In the beginning, it starts as only informative while he's describing the life of a hummingbird and functions of animal hearts, but the tone quickly shifts to a more melancholy environment when he describes how quickly and easily hummingbirds can die. He then talks about how people encounter heartbreak at some point in life which also adds to the melancholy and desolate tone.

The author is trying to reach an audience of people who are rushing through life, people who have trouble opening up to others, and to people who are scared of getting hurt. You know this because he uses metaphors of a hummingbird and a blue whale heart, to show that we are different but in the end everyone's hearts are all similar. He also says that "Perhaps we must [bear to be naked]," directed towards the people who are scared to let others in.

The spark for this essay was the fact that Doyle had a brain tumor and would live life shorter than others, him seeing other people live so carelessly or trying not to get hurt, that they miss out on the opportunities of life. He wants these people to know that whatever they are trying to avoid, it is inevitable and they should live their life the way they want without holding back.

The speaker is Brian Doyle. He was diagnosed with brain cancer and died at 60 from a brain tumor. You can assume that he took time very seriously because he knew he was going to die an early death. He presents himself as having knowledge on the physical and emotional aspects of the heart. This message is important to the author because he knew when he would expire and he saw how everyone was taking advantage of that.

At the time, Doyle was diagnosed with and suffering form a brain tumor. This is significant to his message of time and heartache, because while he was writing this essay, he was a victim to both.
