"Besides,// your loss// is someone else's gain // for I am a coconut,// and the heart of me// is sweeter// than you know"(Grimes 49).
This is an example of a metaphor. It makes you think about how it doesn't matter what's on the outside. Janelle wrote this because she is bullied for her weight, but her metaphor is trying to say that weight doesn't matter and that its whats on the inside that counts. This can also help people understand that their taunts hurt, but she will keep going and she knows what matters.

"The hard slap of Father's words// brings tears to my eyes,// where the names of kith and kin// swim to the surface" (Grimes 49)
This is an example of personification. It shows the reader that the words kith and kin have been hidden away in his mind for a long time. The author shows that those two words were coming out from the back of his mind, and he started to think about them again. As you know, words cannot swim, so the personification gives us the image of the words kith and kin coming out from the deep ocean (the back of his mind) and swimming towards the surface (what he's thinking about), to give us the overall mood and feeling about this topic to him, and how it really never phased him until now

I know that he does not like going to school because in the beginning of the book he states that he does not like going to school. But his mom firs does not like hearing that and second she makes him go to school. Here is some textual evidence that he does not like going to school and it is a good starter to the book so you know a little something about what he wants and doesn't want to do. "School ain't nothin but a joke. My moms dont want to hear that but if it weren't for wesley and my other homeys I wouldn't even be here aiight these white folk talking bout some future like I got one. And Raynard agreeing like he's smart enough to Know." Thes states and proves that he does not want to go to school.

"I dare you to peep
behind these eyes,
discover the poet
in tough-guy disguise.
Don't call me Jump Shot
My name is surprise" (Grimes 32). These are interesting word choices because they show how he is coming out to everyone about how he is much different than what he may seem. This is just another way of doing it, a more interesting way. This passage adds to the peom, scene, and story because he is one, of hopefully many, that may use poems to share information. He is a leader and many may follow in his footsteps. The story may depend on him to encourage people and help them share their own poems about themselves.

"I woke up this morning// exhausted from hiding//the me of me//so I stand here confiding// there's more to Devon//than jump shot and rim"(Grimes 32). This is an example of a hyperbole because he is exaggerating how exhausted he is from being himself. I think this is interesting because I don't think he likes being the jock kid who is good at sports and everybody thinks is dumb. The passage adds to the poem by telling us how he feels about himself and how he wants people to see more then just a sporty person. The scene in the poem might help people to come out and be themselves instead of hiding who they really are and want to be.

"The hard slap of Father's words bring tears to my eyes, where the names kith and kin swim to the surface". (Grimes 49) This quote is an example of personification because it shows the person who is reading the book those words kith and kin had been hidden inside of his mind away for a very long time. Its is personifying the words "kith and kin". The author is trying to show that the two words he said came out of the back of his brain, and he had finally started to think about those two words after so long of not thinking about them. His words are not capable of swimming far out of his mind but just far enough were they can reach his attention.

I think this is important because they want to see each other , but at the same time they missed the days apart from each other. Even at the same time they want to catch up on what they missed for being apart.

That's how it all began" (Grimes 20).

This makes me think that maybe the baby of sarah was a hope for them. Something good they could look forward to. And something that could make their lifes more exciting. Because I feel as if at first they had felt like they were on the edge and had nothing to look foward to in life and then they had a baby so that changes everything. Also I think it's good and this is new for them.
