Valerie's LA Final Project by Valerie

I chose this topic for my final project since it was very relevant at the time due to the US elections. I covered this topic for a month with my students (since I see each class every 15 days) and adapted it so that it was able to be done with all levels ranging from 1ESO - 2BACH!

Elections!

The topic for my project is elections! The purpose was to discuss what was going on in the current US elections, and give the students a chance to participate in an election that actually mattered to them! The idea was to choose a new class president for the grade that they are in. This activity was done with grades 1ESO, 3ESO, and 4ESO, but was modified for the level of English and age that they had. With the younger and lower level students, we focused more on the topic of, "What would I do as class president?" and with the older, higher level students, we did a full election with political parties and the works. This was a great topic for the students as they got to look at what real things they would like to improve in their schools and get creative about what solutions they would like to see brought to the table, all while working on conditional grammar!

For this age range and their level we focused on making a real election. We needed to class periods to get through all the steps and reach a decision on who would be elected as president. To make this happen the powerpoint to the right was used to take them step by step through the process. But, the exact steps we took are as follows:

1) A word wall activity to learn election vocabulary.
2) The students nominated 4 students from the class to run for president. They could volunteer or be nominated.
3) The 4 had to split into 2 political parties and give themselves a party name.
4) As a class we made a list of what areas of the school they would like to see improved and topics they would want their future president to address. (They came up with everything from hand sanitizer, school decoration, uniforms, to bullying)
5) We took some time for the parties to come up with their solutions to the problems in private while the rest of the students wrote out questions they could ask at the "town hall" to the candidates.
6) Town hall: they students asked their questions and the candidates gave their solutions.
7) The students voted on who the representative of each party should be.
8) The party representatives held a debate and the students were able to ask more questions.
9) The students voted on who they wanted to be president. And a president was chosen!
10) Discussion about how the voting system actually works in the US as it is not a majority vote.

Because of the level and need for more individual engagement in order to focus, the elections were held a little differently for the younger group. No powerpoint was used, just the chalk board, pencil, and paper. To the right you can see some photos from the lessons! The way the lesson was done is as follows:

1) Discussion about the current US elections, who is running, etc.
2) We worked together as a class to come up with a list of the areas of the school that they would like to see improved or where they saw problems.
3) Each student wrote a 5 sentence paragraph about what they would do if they were president of 1ESO with correct grammar.
4) Each student stood for their election speech to share what they wrote and think.
5) Discussion about who should be the two presidential candidates.
6) The students voted between the two candidates to chose the president!
