This painting is by Richard Diebenkorn who is one of my favorite artists. I love the way he uses color and the abstract style of his artwork. I see this painting as a depiction of landscape, seen from above. I like that there’s a lot of space in this composition for interpretation.

My favorite hometown artist, Jared Weippert, features a one minute clip on his instagram of his process drawing a portrait of an old man using pencil. I was in complete awe of his creative process and was truly inspired by his artistic capabilities and knowledge of shading and proportions. This is the type of artistry I love as I am a portrait photographer and love to capture people in the moment. I can feel the emotion growing within the artist and the man whom he is drawing. I don’t know the connection between the two, or if the man in the drawing is even real, but he certainly feels alive in the end.

This fine art, larger-than-life oil painting is one of those paintings that has been stuck in my head ever since learning about it in Art History. The incredible size of this painting, 16ft x 24ft, really captivates me. The detail and the use of darkness with intent to convey the real life depiction of the devastating shipwreck scene where 147 people were left adrift at sea. This style of art is an icon of French Romanticism, opening it’s own pathway of a new generation and style of painting. I love that this painting makes you feel real emotion of sadness and sorrow. I also appreciate how the artist was able to make the viewer feel like they are on the boat, even for a moment.

I feel like Budweiser has been ahead of the game with it’s ever changing logos in the field of beer since before I was born. I don’t personally prefer beer, nor this brand, but I have found myself gravitating to this logo throughout my life, even before I was legally allowed to drink. The use of red, white and blue, making the consumer feel more American for choosing this brand. I find it funny the amount of times it claims to be “the best” “king” “world renowned” and the “worlds largest” as companies can just say what they want to, and it doesn’t have to be entirely true, but because its use of beautifully written typography and everything placed so compositionally pleasing to the eye, we don’t even question it. About a decade ago, I collected this logo by frequenting local yard sales as it would be printed on mirrors and made into neon signs, and was aesthetically pleasing while playing beer pong in the garage.

This piece used to give me a feeling of discomfort when I was younger. Something about the face in this piece made it so unforgettable. The pastel look really brought this piece to life. When I look at this piece though, it says a lot more to me than just scribbles. It almost looks as if this a person reaching for help, or someone who is exhausted. Their freakish curved hands give it a dark feel. I like how they didn't try to introduce any colors that were too vibrant as well and stuck to darker shades.

Texture is also something I believe to be very important. This is what is considered to be a photocopy/scanline texture. It may look super simple, but it has brought some of my favorite personal designs I've made to life. It could enhance your work and it helps add depth and balance in certain areas of your work. I also always love to play around with different textures.

Tenmyouya Hisashi - Japanese Spirit No. 14
I for the most part do not consume fine art particularly often, partly because I don't like that fine artwork is non-reproducible. The ethos that I mostly pursue in my art and design is storytelling, and I want my stories to be as widespread as possible.
That being said, this is a painting by Tenmyouya Hisashi, done in a traditional Japanese painting manner, but of a person riding on top of a cyborg walker thing, with cannons all over it. I like this type of artwork because it subverts normal expectations for a traditional Japanese painting, or perhaps uses current subject matters to make what would be a modern traditional painting.

I love doing this stuff because my brain has to properly fill in empty spaces without repeating the same pattern or color next to itself. It creates something to always look at, observe and analyze. I’ve created a good amount of projects that include textile design. Something about drawing the same things a lot in a small space scratches that itch in my brain.

It comes as no surprise to me that I fell in love with gothic lettering. (Im starting to suspect a theme amongst these pieces of art.) I think that most of my design choices come from the history behind them, it’s easy to impress me with art once I hear the history, gothic lettering was developed in the 4th century AD to originally translate the bible. I love the sharp edges and smooth lines within each letter. In my opinion Gothic lettering is one of those fonts that you really can’t go wrong with, the more dramatic the better.

It ties well with their message, "open late." They even used a moon inside of the "o" which I really like to. Small details like this really make a piece pop more to me. I also really like the usage of lighting, how it's more illuminated near the moon and darker as you look farther away.

A lot of the words that are being used for this piece matches with what the joker really is. For example, the Clown prince that’s on the forehead of the Joker is really indicating what the joker is. This is by an illustrator who is also an author of some of my favorite books called "In my Family" and "Family Pictures". The paintings in the books are not complex they are not presented in realism. They are almost cartoon like yet these paintings have been forever treasured in my memory for years.

I love the sketchy look of this illustration. The cat's dread is more potent due to this black and gray illustration. The lines of shading also gives it a rougher look giving the cat more depth. There's different line weight through the piece as well. The most prominent feature through the piece are the lines through line weight and the shading. The lack of colors and sketchiness make it more confusing as the title and the subject don't make it clear as to what is happening leaving it up to interpretation.

This portrait by Louise Elisabeth Vigee Le Brun depicts French noblewoman Madame du Berry. This is a very beautiful painting that captures the moment and has a huge focus on the subject. They use very light colors and many whites to depict the subject. The soft colors give the painting and Madame du Berry a dreamy look. This is an oil painting which gives it a very smooth look. The way she is painted with very small details such as in her hair, folds in her clothes, to her eyelashes give her a very life-like look that makes the painting pop.

The word "Podium", "23. -29.11", and "2006" are scrambled through the piece. This piece is very abstract with many curved lines and blotches of white. The lines are mostly the same weight making it feel consistent, yet out there. The use of only black in the background and white in the lines make it mystique. The lines are don't depict anything.

This is "The Starry Night" by Vincent Van Gogh, his most famous piece. I picked this one because I thought it was just a simple iconic painting. But then I saw a post on Instagram which included this painting and it also had one of those optical illusions where if you stare at the center for like 10 or 20 seconds and then look away, everything becomes disoriented (if that's even the right word, that's the best way I could describe it). When I did that and looked at the painting, to me, it makes the painting so much better as it makes the painting look like the sky is moving. I know that this was never the intention of the painting, but I still thought it was neat to know that this is possible.

This here is an illustration of Alfred Pennyworth (Batman's Butler) by Alex Ross. Alex Ross is one of my favorite visual artists because he makes fictional characters (Mostly DC and Marvel) look hyper realistic. But out of all the illustrations he has done, this one of Alfred is my favorite. Mainly because of the emotion shown on Alfred's face as he's holding Batman's cowl and how the lighting is structured in this piece. Another reason why I put this here is because when I got to see a plethora of Ross' pieces, I was expecting to have his Spider-Man or Batman pieces as my favorite since they're my favorite Heroes, but no, this Alfred piece ended up being my favorite.

This here is a Coca-Cola Christmas Advertisement. I put this here because this was one of Coke's most successful marketing campaigns ever. While we see Christmas advertisements all the time from many companies, starting in the 1930s, Coke really took advantage of Christmas advertising as before this, barely anyone drank soft drinks during the winter. So Coke started showing ads that showed Santa drinking Coca-Cola, to essentially show people that even this guy can drink Coca-Cola during Christmas time. And It actually worked.

Whenever I see pieces of art that is about a person I really love, look up to, or idolize, it's always amazing to me because that means that me and the artist that made the piece of so-and-so have something that we both really love. And in the case of Michael Jordan, he's my and my parents all-time favorite Basketball player and I remember a quote (though I don't remember it fully) from Jordan that goes something like, "I've failed again, and again, and again, and again. And that's why I succeed". To this day, this is still one of my favorite quotes ever said from a famous person I idolize.
