Elliot lives in America, and Kailash lives in India. They are pen pals. By exchanging letters and pictures, they learn that they both love to climb trees, have pets, and go to school. Their worlds might look different, but they are actually similar. Same, same. But different! Some examples of how they are the same are going to school with friends but one is on a wagon the other on a bus, and another example is living with a family one is small the other is large and extended.
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/10955187-same-same-but-different

WHY IS THIS QUALITY LITERATURE?

- I love how simple the concepts are but how deep the meaning goes. It simply points out how even though something looks different you are still the same in some ways! Just because things are exactly the same doesn't mean they are the same, this is such a great concept to teach little ones!
- I also like how the story relates it to children utilizing pictures. Rather then just writing stories to each other the boys in the story exchange pictures. This makes a connection with those young readers who may not be the best writers yet.
-This book focuses on culture and difference, geography, and acceptance. The boys didn't know each other in the beginning but grew to learn about each other and accepting that although they are different they are the same in many ways. It allowed you to see a friendship blossom over time.
-I think this book is a good recommendation because they characters in the story are great models of character! Students can see a glimpse into how accepting someone into their lives who is different can have a great impact and create a wonderful relationship!

USES IN TEACHING

This books offers so much versatility in teaching!
- One way I would utilize this book in teaching is the most obvious explaining culture and difference. It has such a simple approach of describing difference! I would have my students paint a picture that describes them. I would then have the classes share the pictures and point out the differences and explain how even in the same state and area you can still be the same but different. It is a easy way to expand on culture and diversity and start that discussion with a young age.
- Another way this book could be used is learning about cultures and diversities. Each student could pick a different county and learn about that country. Then utilizing pictures and words they would create a comparison on the same, same different aspects. Presenting to the class would further share information.
- I also think it is a great way to introduce a pen pal! This is something that had gone away with technology in my opinion. It would be neat to as a classroom write/draw with another class in a foreign country!
- Learning to write a letter, the students could read the story and then write a letter like the children in the book do. Give them specific things to include and discuss in the letter. You can expand it farther by teaching them how to properly set up and sign the letter, and also address the envelope!
-Have the students create a collage of their own world.
-This could be read in an art class, and then followed up by having the students draw and paint their own version of the story.
