1. Line-ups at festivals

   • In a survey by female:pressure (“FACTS 2020-2021”) of 109 electronic music festivals (159 editions), about 27% of acts were women (also including transgender & non-binary) vs ~59% male; non-binary ~1.3%. EDM+2Magnetic Magazine+2

   • A historical comparison: a decade ago (around 2012) only ~9% of acts were female; so there has been progress. Magnetic Magazine+2female:pressure+2

2. Heavy underrepresentation in production/technical roles

   • The “Fix The Mix” report (2022) found that across all the top songs, women and non-binary people held very small shares of producer/engineer credits. In electronic music, women/non-binary producers had ~17.6% of producer credits in top 50 electronic tracks; for engineers and other technical roles the numbers are much worse. The Guardian+1

3. Charts / radio / playlists

   • In UK radio airplay for dance music over 2020-22, tracks that feature only female or non-binary primary artists are extremely rare: in some sets less than 1%. EDM

   • On some dance / electronic playlists, male artists dominate heavily. EDM

4. Career advancement, executive / senior roles

   • Women are less likely to reach executive or leadership positions in the electronic music industry. associationforelectronicmusic.org+1

   • They often report that their work is not taken as seriously, that they have more obstacles, fewer role models, lower pay etc. associationforelectronicmusic.org+1

Why these disparities exist (so it’s not just “preference” or “women choosing not to do it”)

To counter arguments like “there are too many women now,” it's helpful to understand the structural issues producing imbalance:

• Access to technical training / resources: Music production, engineering, audio tech often requires training/learning, gear, mentorship etc. Historically, fewer women have been encouraged or supported in that path.

• Bias & visibility: Women are less visible; media tends to focus on male artists, male-dominated networks, male gatekeepers. Also stereotypes (e.g. “women DJs are more about image than skill”) still persist.

• Gatekeeping, discrimination, harassment: Women often report discrimination, being passed over, having to prove themselves more, facing harassment—both online / in person. This discourages some from staying or seeking the same opportunities.

• Economic & logistical barriers: Touring, equipment, schedule flexibility- these can present more barriers (safety on tour, financial risk etc.).

Why increasing representation or “positive discrimination” isn’t the same as “taking away from men”

Some points to show that more women / non-male artists on lineups etc doesn’t hurt male artists unfairly:

• Zero-sum fallacy: Saying “if there are more women, then fewer men can play” assumes there’s a fixed number of slots and that men have already filled all deserving ones. In many cases, men dominate so heavily that shifting some slots to less represented people reduces the unfairness, but doesn’t exclude lots of qualified men from opportunities.

• Broadening the talent pool: By giving more opportunities to underrepresented people, you potentially uncover new talent, new sounds, diversity of style — that benefits the whole scene.

• Audience demand and diversity: Diverse lineups tend to attract more diverse crowds; people want to see themselves represented. This can grow the audience, open up new markets.

• Fairness / equity: The idea is correcting for historical and structural disadvantages, not punishing anyone. Equity seeks a level playing field; since men have been dominant, giving space to others is part of balancing things.

• Precedents & industry support: Many arts, cultural, and creative industries adopt equity, quotas, or affirmative actions, widely accepted. It’s not unusual or radical when you explain the rationale.

I’m listening to this podcast today and it has touched me deeply so I wanted to share it! In it, a dancer, an astrologist and a somatic therapist talk about their work in embodiment through the lens of collective politics, trauma and healing. It touches on some difficult areas really beautifully and expansively and it invites us to gently ponder the identities and belief systems that we hold. In this way, we begin to see how, unconsciously, we get in our own way of creating the best world for ourselves and others. For those that are more sceptical about astrology, the first hour barely mentions it, so you might still enjoy listening. These are definitely topics that deeply resonate with me and I hope for projects that allow for further exploration/application of the ideas. Maybe someone here is interested too? 😊❤️
