I noticed from the results on this mindset assessment that I was unsure if you can develop your intelligence. I was surprised with this. I do believe you can develop your intelligence though I didn't give it the highest score possible. It was correct when it stated that I get discouraged when I perform poorly at something. I do feel that I am a bit of a perfectionist. I do believe that I have room to grow in this journey of growth mindset.

On this questionnaire, I knew what the growth mindset answer *should* be, but I answered it for where I *actually* am as a human being. The results synopsis gave me this suggestion: "you may seek challenges and perform at a high level, but .... be rather hard on yourself for mistakes." This is 100% me. I *know* that we learn from mistakes. I have said those very words to my students. But I still haven't managed to stop giving myself a hard time for making mistakes. This is a good reminder to me that I need to do the same coaching for myself that I do for my students.

On this quiz, it stated that I care about my performance, but I do not want to work hard to do well. It also mentioned that I tend to have the mindset that I am "just not good at" certain things, but I could change that mindset and have a better outcome. I find that both of these statements feel very true for me. If something is a challenge for me, I give up rather quickly assuming that I am just not good at it. I definitely need to work on practicing what I preach in the classroom.

While completing the assessment, I felt that I had a decent grasp on which responses were more growth mindset oriented. It was difficult for me to consider these statements without taking into account outside factors that also impact ability to learn and grow. In the end, I had to recognize that I am often more comfortable with work that I can complete easily without mistake. My results stated that while I have a “good foundation,” it is possible to “be rather hard on yourself for mistakes.” I agree with that statement and recognize that as the perfectionist in me. My desire to get it right the first time sometimes outweighs my desire to grow from the experience. Personally, that is something I can continue to challenge, while also considering how my students may struggle with that same concept.

I tried to answer the questions as I currently feel. The results spoke of me feeling anxious if I feel I won't do something well. This is sort of true. When something is difficult I try to figure it out. My anxiety kicks in when I'm really struggling and I feel I need help but can't seem to find it. I then get frustrated and I get nowhere. This is something I'm hoping a growth mindset can assist me.

It was challenging to take the quiz and answer how I truly feel vs what I thought was the right answer. When I answered the questions I tried to stick with how I truly felt instead of trying to be "perfect" in my answers. Reading the results matched me completely! I am a perfectionist at heart and struggle when things don't come easily to me. When things are more challenging I tend to back away from it instead sticking with it. I tend to be very hard on myself when I don't do something well the first time. This is such an internal struggle for me vs a public struggle. I find myself often talking the talk but not walking the walk so it was interesting reading that I have more potential than I am using. I think that is the biggest part of my journey is being okay with the bumps and seeing them as growth instead of failures.

I found that I have some work to do in order to “grow” my growth mindset. In my description it mentioned the fact that I may feel disappointed in myself when I don’t do something well or make a mistake. This is so very true. Therefore, I hope to continue to learn more about how I can gain a better perspective of how I can see my own potential to grow and learn through taking risks and making mistakes.

It's funny, the little I know about growth mindset I tend to think "why wouldn't students buy in to this? It's a must more positive way of thinking!" Then when I took this quiz and answered the questions honestly I realized that I don't have the best growth mindset for myself. I tend to shy away from failure, and as a result would rather have things easy rather than have to struggle through work. I see this a lot in my everyday life too. I really struggle with patience. When my wife and I buy a new shelf or desk from IKEA I'm usually a mess 10 minutes in to trying to set the object up. The results of the survey mentioned that I probably have a lot of untapped potential because of my preference to succeed right away rather than struggle through more difficult work.

I believe we can always get better at something and I know mistakes are part of it, but I still struggle there. The results said I may fear failure because of other peoples judgement. This is so true. I am so concerned with other peoples view of me and I know this holds me back, Looking forward to working on that. It also said if I am holding back ( which I sometimes do) I am not using my full potential.

I feel that my results were very accurate. I’ve been working on having a growth mindset since I learned about it last year, but I can definitely improve! When we did the Clifton Strengths Finder, my top theme was developer. I see the potential in people and want to help them become the best they can be. However, sometimes I struggle to step back and see the potential in myself. I like working hard. I’m ok with making mistakes, but I struggle when I’m not doing my best. I can be a perfectionist on projects that are important to me. If I don’t like my progress, I get frustrated because my results are not matching what I know I’m capable of. When I take a step back and refocus, I can approach it with a growth mindset. I still need to work on having a growth mindset from the beginning of a project and celebrating the progress I’ve made at each step.

I would say that my test results were fairly accurate. I would agree with the statement that I strongly believe that one can increase their intelligence by learning and not being afraid to put in hard work. My results also compared exercising the brain the same way as exercising your body to get stronger. This is a phrase that I have used with my students very often. I also understand that there are still a lot of areas where I can grow with growth mindset. One thing my results suggested is becoming more comfortable with negative feedback. Being a college athlete I was always trying to strive for perfection. Although I would eventually get to the correct mindset after receiving negative feedback, I feel that I could make this transition quicker.

I think that in the classroom I am much more inclined to plug into a growth mindset. But I realize that in a different setting (say trying to repair something in my home or car) I can easily fall into a fixed mindset. This makes me wonder if that is true for others as well - in particular my students. Are some of them more inclined to favor one mindset over the other depending on setting and circumstances?

There are still times when I catch myself saying “I’m not good at math” or “I am a terrible reader”. Unfortunately those mindsets were instilled in me at a very young age, the same age as the students I currently teach. I use my experiences as teachable moments for my students and feel that it also helps ME to grow. I find myself with a growth mindset when I am making art and also on this journey of obtaining my masters. There were times when I thought high school would be as far as I would go. Self talk is a very powerful thing, making sure to keep it positive is the key!!

However, my test results noted that I am on my way to a growth mindset: “You are moving towards a growth mindset, but there are a few ideas that might be holding you back.” Interestingly enough, the test results noted that I see performance as a measure of ability. As a teacher, I’ll admit, I often look at student data and often make black and white assumptions. However, after taking some time to analyze my results, the quiz has helped open my eyes to see that I should step out of my own comfort zone more often to see the bigger picture. (What a great lesson to share with my students if they are upset about a situation!)

I wasn't too surprised by the results. I consider myself as someone that has a growth mindset. I love challenging myself to improve and various aspects of my life. One not so serious example is golf. I've recently picked up golf after not playing virtually my whole life. I struggled right away which was very frustrating, but I kept going out there and working on different aspects of the game. I even watched some videos on Youtube to learn. I'm excited to learn more about how I can teach growth mindset to my students!

I feel the self-assessment quiz that was assigned is a good indicator of where I am on the Growth Mindset continuum. Overall, I have a good foundation. The results show that I care about learning and willing to work hard. However, the results also show that I am uncomfortable with constructive feedback and that I am hard on myself for making mistakes. This is an area that I know about myself and I am trying to change.

Just like the students in our classrooms, there will be times when we look at what is being asked of us and take on a fixed mindset. And then after a moment I paused and reframed my thinking a bit and shifted toward a growth mindset about the idea.

The first time I took this assessment, I worked very hard to give the answers that were a true reflection on how I felt instead of what I knew was the expected answer. It was humbling to look at it that way. This time I felt like my answers were more in line with the expected answers. Overall I saw growth in my mindset and view of growth mindset in general, but I also saw areas that I need to continue to work on. Starting this masters journey has been a test of my growth mindset because I am jumping out of my comfort zone and challenging myself to be okay with not having all of the answers and growing as a learner and an educator. I think that my mindset shift is reflective in how I feel now at the end of the class. I am finding my groove in the challenge and reminding myself that it feels good to grow your thinking and understanding.

When I was a kid I totally thought if you were smart it had everything to do with your parents, but as an adult and after taking this class, that is definitely not true. My results stated this at the end, “They know that mental exercise makes their brains grow smarter—the same way that exercise makes an athlete stronger and faster.” I never thought of mental exercise as helping my brain grow smarter, I just always thought it kept me sane. As an athlete, I enjoyed the analogy of linking the two together, especially because I could relate to the athlete side of it.

I do see that my mindset has shifted into more of a growth mindset. When I first took the test I was thinking mostly about my actual work as an artist and whether or not I feel smarter when I am challenged. There are times that I make art because I don’t want to be challenged. I use it as a release of stress, when I want to do something “mindless” and something that brings me joy. But I looked at the questions differently this time. I wanted the “test” to be fair so while I still focused on my art work, I thought about it more in ways of pushing myself to improve and try new forms of art. I do think that I was given the gift of creativity and artistic ability but it doesn’t end there. Pushing myself brings me joy and I feel successful when I am challenged. Looking at artwork I have created that was difficult and I had to push myself to finish mean so much more to me than the works that I just did quickly and “mindlessly” or that were “easy”.

As an adult and after this class I have really started to look at my disabilities in a different way. They no longer need to be a source of anxiety. I don’t have to see them as limitations or be angry about them anymore. All it means is that I may have to try harder than the average person and it will most likely take me a bit longer but I will get whatever the task is done! I know that it will take me longer to read a passage or handout given at the next professional development meeting or I might struggle to spell a difficult word on the board the next time I’m in class but I don’t have to let them stop me from trying. I will learn from my mistakes and keep trying.

Simply put, instilling a growth mindset within myself as an educator is so vital because I am a role model to my students. When I display a curiosity for learning, I am open to outcomes, I take on a charismatic approach to situations, and I invite challenges into my life, I display my resiliency, and growth mindset attitude about learning, and in life in general. It is a humbling feeling and a big responsibility to know that my words, actions, and mindset has such a positive impact within my students.

If I can instill the growth mindset in my students, that can learn anything. The way I talk to them, the feedback that I give, and the assignments that I give out need to all be communicating that value of the growth mindset. Having a growth mindset is also important in my work as an educator because I want to continually get better as a teacher. I want to learn new things and approaches to teaching so that I can be a better teacher for my students. In order to have this goal, I need to have a growth mindset to accomplish my goals.

While on paper it may look the same, there are many variables at play. The result of having a different group of students in my room, on a different day means the same lesson on paper will not go the same way. I need to be adaptable. As an educator I also need to help students focus on developing their own growth mindset. I understand that they will achieve more that way, I need to help them begin to understand that. I will set each and everyone of us up for eventual success if I focus on the effort and process of learning and not on the end result.

Having a growth mindset is essential if you want to have the skills to learn and work through struggles with confidence. It's important to also educate your students on how to do this and model it too. Students can really internalize failures as negative and then feel negative about themselves too. It can lead to students who don't would rather be disruptive instead of trying to not show their peers that they "don't get it". By having a growth mindset as an educator we not only can work through these struggles with students but also practice by working through challenges in the classroom.

I kind of answered this on the last post but I have learned that my knowledge can continue to grow through effort. I still need to improve on being okay with making mistakes and challenging myself when things are too easy.

Again, I answered this a little bit in the last post but education is constantly changing. The way things are taught, our world, our students and parents are always changing. As a teacher, we have to be constantly learning about these things in order to give our students the education they deserve. Having a growth mindset is knowing that you can always get better by giving maximum effort and persevering through challenges. If you don't have a growth mindset, you are comfortable teaching the same way every year, whether it is the right way to teach or not. You don't have that desire to want to get better. You are not giving your students what they deserve.

We are capable of learning and doing just about anything, if we put in the work. Our brain can learn so many new things. Mistakes, so hard for me, but also so important. Embracing our mistakes will lead to amazing growth, My biggest take away, the first thing that will always come to mind for me, is to embrace " the good struggle" I love that phrase.

We can share the good struggle we may be facing with our class. We can point out our mistakes and how we learned from them. Also. we can always do better as a teacher. A growth mindset will allow us to look at our teaching, see what is working, where we need work, and change course accordingly.

While I can more easily recognize the components of a growth mindset, I still personally have room for improvement. Embracing challenges rather than accepting the perfect outcome will help me grow as a learner. Additionally, I can focus on appreciating criticism and feedback rather than shy away from it. I also want my students to do the same in my classroom. I realize now how important it is for teachers to demonstrate a growth mindset to students.

To me, having a growth mindset means celebrating the whole learning process. A growth mindset means celebrating and focusing on growth and effort instead of only the end result. Part of celebrating the process is using praises that focus on perseverance and not natural ability. Another part of the learning process is knowing that mistakes are going to happen, so we need to learn from them and not get upset when they happen. We also need to normalize making mistakes and struggling with something so everyone knows they are part of learning and life. Also, part of learning is seeking out challenges because they are learning opportunities. A growth mindset takes constant work. It requires individuals to constantly be learning and monitoring their thinking because it is easy to go to a fixed mindset.

Having a growth mindset is important as an educator because we are teaching the future of the world, and having a growth mindset will benefit students throughout their lives. If we, as educators, have a growth mindset, we are able to model why a growth mindset is beneficial for our students. We can show them that mistakes are ok, and that they are learning opportunities. We can normalize mistakes so students don’t see them as a negative experience. Teachers can also reinforce that challenges and working hard are important because they help us learn and strengthen our brains. When students see us being excited about mistakes and challenges, they are more likely to start adopting a growth mindset as well. Hopefully, as students are exposed to growth mindset and see adults modeling it, they will adopt a growth mindset as well. I believe the world will be a better place if everyone had a growth mindset and could recognize when they are in a fixed mindset.

That your destiny is controlled by YOU - your effort, your resiliency, and your willingness to take risks and accept challenges. When I am stuck in a fixed mindset I feel much more helpless, much less in control, and much more vulnerable to outside factors.

For me, making mistakes has always been a big set back for me as I often times want things to go just right. I feel that throughout this class and reading the book “Onward” I have come to realize how important it is, not to be so hard on myself for making mistakes. I know I work hard to help my students try and see that mistakes are apart of learning but if they don’t see me modeling this first hand then there is not much buy in. I plan to continue to practice using growth mindset messages with myself so that I can help my students and my own children develop their own growth mindset as well.
