The "Deutsche Einigung," also known as the unification of Germany, occurred in the 19th century and led to the foundation of the German Empire in 1871. The Prussian Prime Minister Otto von Bismarck was the driving force for the unification of Germany. To do this, he used a "blood and iron" technique. The Austro-Prussian War of 1866 and the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1871 were two of the conflicts and diplomatic moves that went into the unification of Germany. On January 18, 1871, King Wilhelm I of Prussia was declared the Emperor (Kaiser) of the newly united Germany at the Palace of Versailles.

A key player in the Risorgimento, or movement for Italian unification, was Camillo de Cavour. In the middle of the 19th century, he was the prime minister of the important Italian state of the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia. In order to reduce Austrian rule over Italian territory, Cavour played a significant role in forming alliances with other Italian states and European powers. His diplomatic efforts and political maneuvers made a crucial contribution to Italy's eventual unification in 1861. Cavour's foresight and leadership are credited with assisting Italy's unification as a nation-state.

Spain formally acknowledged Mexico's independence on August 24, 1821, bringing an end to a protracted and bloody war for Mexican freedom. After years of military warfare and talks between Mexican independence leaders and Spanish authorities, this recognition finally occurred. The First Mexican Empire, with Agustin de Iturbide as its first emperor, was able to come into existence thanks to the acknowledgment of Mexico's independence. This empire, however, did not last long, as Mexico later changed its status to a republic in 1823. The recognition of Mexican independence by Spain was a pivotal event in Mexican history that set the stage for the country's future growth as a sovereign state.

The United States declared independence from Great Britain in 1776, leaving Central Europe with around 300 sovereign, independent states. The German states were part of the Holy Roman Empire, which dated back to the 800s. In the mid-eighteenth century, a rivalry developed between Austria and Prussia, the two largest states of the Holy Roman Empire. Austria was traditionally the dominant state, but Prussia challenged its hegemony in the 1740s. Prussia officially recognized the United States in 1785, while Austria did not until 1797.

Italy was founded in 1861 by leaders who unified the land into a single nation. The land was divided into smaller states and partially occupied by Austria. The Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia was the only liberal constitutional monarchy since 1848. Lombardy and Veneto were annexed by Austria after the Napoleonic Wars in 1815. North-Central Italy had three duchies of Parma, Modena, and Tuscany, ruled by Habsburg and Bourbon dynasties and closely allied with Austria.

n 1521, Hernán Cortés and his conquistadors conquered Mexico, leading to three centuries of colonial rule and the introduction of new diseases. Cortés founded Ciudad de Mexico and a series of viceroys, known as New Spain. Despite his traditional education, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rejected many of Catholicism's fundamental tenets, including the Virgin birth, clerical celibacy, and the existence of hell. The earliest revolt against Spanish rule was led by Martín Cortés, the illegitimate son of Hernán Cortés and his translator, La Malinche. The Mexican War of Independence was sparked by Napoleon's invasion and occupation of Spain from 1808 to 1813.
