Also, from the colour scheme of the front cover being blue, we can assume that their target demographic is predominantly males. NME started out simply recommending current alternative music to their target audience and updating their target audience on alternative music news; Although over the course of time, NME have diverted from simply writing about alternative music and rather talking about all music that is popular in that moment. To add, the way the shot is lit, as well as the choice of a close up shot and use of fonts we can presume that NME are targeting a much more mature and adult audience who are interested in producing music and all of the behind the scenes of music production. NME is available in both a print format (which it is most widely known for) as well as a digital print format to keep up with other potential music magazine competition as well as staying relevant with their audience by integrating into new forms of technology; Furthermore, NME also has a website which is constantly being updated with current music news. There is a bold white font used which could symbolize the lead singer’s purity and a new slate for the singer and band; In addition, the text “From bedroom to Brixton” is in the same colour as his skin which could both symbolize how on stage and off he has kept true to himself and he continues to perform with sincerity. Next, a close-up angle of the artist is used to show how he is the main subject of this issue of NME, the close-up angle could also suggest that in this comeback interview he is vulnerable and open, we are on an equal level to the singer. In addition to this, the lighting is clearly centred on his face which suggests that that that a large part of the magazine is focused on the lead singer of Metronomy; Also, the colour-scheme of the magazine of this issue is a dark-blue which could represent the singers calm and down to earth tone\nature.
The fonts used are very minimalistic, and some words are in bold and white to symbolize purity and a new slate for the singer.
New issues of NME are released every Friday, and from various NME covers that I have seen I can assume that the target demographic for NME is predominantly males and people who are interested with the most up to date and popular musical trends (Although NME was a magazine focused on the best and most popular indie music and musical trends). From this, I’m able to make a guess that the genre of NME is pop music. The title of the magazine is in bold contrasting colours (Red and white) to represent how it stands well apart from the competition.

There is pull features surrounding the front page including promotional offers such as special posters and exclusive interviews; These are more features which could influence people to buy the magazine, which is the purpose that kerrang designs their magazine like they do. The header and footer of the magazine displays more bands and appearances inside the magazine which could further influence people to buy the magazine; The font choice and colour contrasts to the rest of the front cover (White - Black contrast) which makes seeing the names of other artists in each issue much easier to read. The main image text is also in a deep blood red font colour to match the colour scheme of the front cover. Due to the recognisable brand, people won't need to see the full cover to know who's magazine it is; This is further helped by the band being displayed on the front cover match's the typical bands Kerrang usually talk about and feature in their magazines; All these features are aimed towards their teenage target demographic. The way kerrang writes and present their magazines mean thats the quality is easy to maintain with the weekly basis they release their magazine

The fonts used for the pull-quote of the article is very distorted and grimy to match the rock genre of not only the band but the magazine as well; The pull-quote also crosses over the two pages which signifies to the reader that both these pages are connected.The main image of the double page spread takes up an entire page which displays the lead singer showing the audience how he is the leader of the band; Also, the black and white is used specifically to promote their brand identity. There are anchors all over the two pages to help give context to the images displayed. Next, we ca see that the article structure is in a fashion typical of most double page spread articles (Small font, aligned into columns). I chose this camera as it was light and simple whilst still having features that are essential in creating an effective magazine cover. These features include exporting images in RAW files (Uncompressed/Unaltered images) which means higher quality photos that can be further intricately edited in comparison to a standard j-peg image. Next, even before the editing stage, the image created can even be altered from behind the camera by changing the ISO (How sensitive the camera is to light) or Aperture (How much light enters the camera lenses) which can further individualize my photography from other magazines which is key in selling my magazine to a target audience.

Lighting (Variable Spotlights):
Lighting is key in capturing an atmosphere for the photo-shoot and giving the photography specific moods and instilling them into the audience (E.G. blue can create feelings of serenity, honesty and confidence; But it can also be associated with feelings of sadness and anxiety).


Tripod:
I required a Tripod in order to ensure my photography is as stable and steady as possible.

Backdrop (Green-screen):
The purpose of the green-screen is to allow me to make editing the model as easy as possible; In addition to this, i can also make any alterations to the background as easy as possible rather than having to intricately cut around the model and then place them onto the correct backdrop.

When creating a magazine, its extremely important to ensure that all content (Picture, text ETC) is original and not taken from any other sources; The only exception to this rule is when content taken from other sources is taken with permission from the copyright holders. Without permission, you're liable for a fine up to £50,000, 6 months imprisonment or even as far as to take your magazine off of the shelves and seize publishing of the magazine.

Intellectual property rights:
If copyright material is found in a magazine, in order to make it legally sound for this to occur, the magazine publishers would have to come to an agreement with the intellectual property holders (the people who hold to rights to certain material/content). This process would involve the intellectual property holders signing a patent which would allow them to legally hand over rights to the magazine publisher which allows their content to be placed in the magazine with a copyright stamp or tag with the actual holder of intellectual property's name on the content in question.

Slander/Libel:
Firstly, Libel and slander is the publishing of false information that could harm a person's reputation; or in simple terms, a written defamation. It is illegal to write slanderous/libel statements that could lead to imminent violence/ illegal activities and the magazine can be sued for up to an unlimited fine if this is the case. If the written statement hurts a persons reputation but the statement is true, the magazine is protected by law (This is considered free speech).

Content:
The content in a magazine has to follow certain guidelines in order to be okay and legal to publish. Firstly, it's not being okay to publish blasphemous content or any content that infringes on somebodies race or religion; Next, nudity is only allowed to be placed in magazines where that is the implicit purpose, or if it is placed in a way that that means that young people won't be exposed to this content. Violence is allowed to be published in the appropriate magazines as long they are used to serve the purpose of informing or education, if violence is depicted in a gratuitous way (Almost as if it promoting violent behavior, this is not okay by law and the magazine is not allowed to be published.

Firstly, always bring spare equipment and extra batteries to a photo-shoot just in case of equipment failing or batteries dying mid-shoot; To add, its also a good idea to check all equipment that will be used beforehand just in case to prevent things such as the aforementioned failure of equipment and batteries in the first place.

Next, In case of an artist not showing up to the photo-shoot, have back up artists who can take their place (We would also need researchers to create back up articles to match these artists in the event that they end up being used); We could also find past photos of the artist who didn't show up to the photo-shoot to use instead, or even claim the rights to a recent photo already taken of the artist to use instead and just credit the real photographer at the bottom in the event of that.

Thirdly, we have to always have researchers making sure that all we are writing and including in our magazine is the most recent, up to date and exclusive information on whatever artists/events/ETC we choose to include in our magazines.

Furthermore, When the photo-shoot is taking place we need to ensure the location that the photo-shoot is taking place is as safe as possible, and if we feel there is any hazards or reasons in general to not have the photo-shoot take place there we need a back-up location booked, checked and ready to use instead.

Also, we need to ensure all data is safe during the editing phase so we must ensure that all data is backed up onto external hard-drives that we will keep safe at the magazine headquarters (always keep spare external hard-drives in the event of one that's already in use gets filled up entirely), this is so if in the event of a program crash, we can ensure that all data is still safe and not corrupted so we can continue to work on them in time for publishing. It would also be in the best interest of the editors to save on specific intervals just in case of a program crash.

Feedback also shows that my front cover and double page spread is interesting and effective in keep the readers attention through use of layout, colour scheme and interesting fonts.

Next, most of the feedback have given me a high rating in terms of interest in purchasing my magazine. 

People also feel my magazine maintains a consistent style and this makes it easier for the reader to comprehend the genre and style of my magazine; these are both factors which could lead people to be interested in purchasing my magazine.

In the further comments section of my questionnaire, i received alot of constructive criticism including:

"You could add more to the front cover in order to make it more interesting and eye-catching, this would also appeal more to your target demographic"

"The primary use of red maybe not the best choice, as it makes it harder to focus on the text and being able to read the text, maybe use a more muted colour that is easier on the eyes, such as a light blue"

"The contents page is too similar to the front cover, there is not very much that allows the reader to distinguish between the front cover and the content page, this may stop the content page from capturing readers interest"

Firstly, in terms of positive comments i was told that my use of font for the title on my front page is interesting and unique which will allow my magazine to stand apart from any other generic magazine; In addition, one viewer mentioned how my use of colour contrasts succeeds at easily capturing the attention of the reader and will grabbing the attention of potential customers into buying my magazine rather than any other magazine.

In terms of negative feedback/constructive criticism, many viewers mentioned how there is a lack of focus, and they found it hard to understand what the magazine is actually about or what content is in this magazine, and this is a big problem when you have to capture the attention of customers and make them interested and want to buy your magazine, yet they are unable to understand my magazine or the content within.

Also, i was told that the use of paint splatters for text boxes was an interesting choice but the execution was sloppy and i could pay more attention to cut them out neater and polish up the edges to ensure a professional look for my magazine.

Another piece of negative feedback that i received was that the text-box fonts were hard to read against the harsh, bright colours of the paint splatters (This could also be due to the colour choice for the font blending in too much with the background) so to improve this i could either decrease the paint splatter brightness  or alternatively test out with different fonts and colours until i find a font and colour that match and yet at the same time contrast with the paint splatter backgrounds to make the text further stand out from the background.

Finally my last piece of criticism was about my descriptions for my articles being too ambiguous, so people didn't really understand what any of the articles were actually about.]]> 2018-07-03 07:48:06 UTC https://padlet.com/niall_whealing/i1yi2lrmkuds/wish/269240313 Reflection/Evaluation niall_whealing https://padlet.com/niall_whealing/i1yi2lrmkuds/wish/269242141 I personally feel that i am overall happy and pleased with how my final magazine designs turned out; And this is partly thanks to the helpful constructive criticism which helped me to understand what would and wouldn't catch a readers eye.

I am most pleased with my front cover, if i had to choose between them. I feel it does the most to successfully capture a readers attention and it follows magazine conventions successfully.

Reflecting on all 3 designs i feel i could include more in the double page spread to capture the readers attention, include some more pull features or include more images that fill the page rather than just taking up corner room as this could be considered generic and boring; This would also mean i would be following more magazine conventions which guarantee my magazines success.

Also, i feel that although the contents page is interesting and successful and keeps the style continuity from the front page and double page spread, but there are minor things i think i could change in the future to ensure that my magazine content page looks as professional as possible, This includes better stickers to exaggerate if a story is exclusive and also provide the reader with a simple way to distinguish exclusive stories from regular stories if the reader has only bought the magazine to read the exclusive stories.

I feel like the colour scheme and style is largely cohesive between the 3 pages.
