With our help you might be the next Carey Mulligan, Michael Cera, Mila Kunis or James Buckley.

Essentially, actors are performers who work across various different media, including theatre, television, radio and film. Some actors also do voiceovers for animated projects, act on television commercials and record audiobooks.

An actor’s primary duty is to effectively communicate the character that they are playing to an audience, using their voice, body, actions and reactions. Through their art, actors tell stories, engender emotional reactions in their audience and make people think.

Acting is a powerful profession; by pretending to be somebody else, actors are able to trick people into believing that the character they are playing is actually real. Actors influence emotions, trends and critical discussion. Without them, the world would be a boring place.

Many performers work across various different areas of the acting profession. For instance, many actors eventually make the crossover from television to film acting. However, some actors choose to focus on one area of acting. For example, many performers concentrate solely on a career in theatre.

To be a successful actor, you will need a certain amount of talent. Acting is a tough, taxing profession, which requires lots and lots of hard work.

Indeed, an actor’s typical work activities extend beyond simply working on-set and performing on-stage. When the cameras aren’t rolling and the lights aren’t on, the action is all offstage.

Actors rehearse their roles, take speech and acting classes, conduct independent research and try their best to refine the character that they’re playing. Famous actors may also be required to promote the productions they’re working on by giving interviews to the press and making television appearances.

Obviously, actors need to find acting jobs before they can perform. Consequently, actors will need to spend a lot of time during the early stages of their career, searching for the right agent, attending auditions and building up a network of industry contacts.

Once you’re finally working on a production, you will need to be on time, know your lines off by heart, and depict your character effectively. These individuals are typically employees of the venue and not associated with the production staff. Among the additional responsibilities of the staff are answering customer inquiries by phone or e-mail and organizing blocks of tickets for third-party ticket agents. When necessary, the staff cooperates with the group sales department to hold seats for patron groups and will recognize applicable discounts as established by the ticket sales manager. In coordination with the press agent, the box office will be responsible for issuing passes to reporters and critics, as well as other special guests. Those working in the box office track sales and seat assignments through manual systems or computer software applications and reconcile tickets sold against revenue for every performance on a daily basis. Each individual is personally accountable for accurately processing cash and electronic transactions and must carefully record both. Other common tasks related to ticket sales may include processing mail orders for tickets, including stuffing and addressing envelopes.

Inevitably, ticket issues arise at any event, and the box office staff is usually the first line of defense. It is common for customers to face problems such as redeeming tickets issued for the wrong performance, exchanging tickets, getting refunds, and even dealing with counterfeit tickets. The staff must adhere to established policies and procedures, while attempting to accommodate the patron. Where possible, these individuals work with the box office managerand house manager to arrange to admit every patron who wishes to attend, occasionally offering standing room or vouchers for a different showing. When counterfeit tickets arrive, they are generally not the fault of the customer. In such instances, the ticket sellers must immediately confiscate the fake and submit a report to management. The staff must have a keen eye to spot such impostors, as counterfeiters are proving to be increasingly crafty.

http://getinmedia.com/careers/box-office-staff

Qualification/Training-
Skills & Education

A college education in theatrical management or event production is recommended for this career, though majors in finance, accounting, and related areas are applicable. Those working in the box office must display familiarity with automated ticket systems, as well as software applications such as Word, Excel, and electronic databases. Ticket sellers are numbers people who can do long calculations in their minds and have a knack for complicated memorization. These individuals are hyper organized and meticulous. Of course, a high degree of personal responsibility and integrity is required. Further, as customer service representatives, the box office staff should exude a positive personality and eagerness to help people.

http://getinmedia.com/careers/box-office-staff

MAC Birmingham Tour Notes...

These notes were taken whilst having a tour around the MAC in Birmingham...
- Social media is run by the communications team, they all run twitter and facebook pages. Nobody is specifically dedicated to running them, everybody has access. The communications team is also the marketing and sales team and they have a variety of jobs to partake. Small team for such a large venue and the amount of jobs that the undertake.
- They offer to sell the tickets for the performances if they require it, or the company can sell themselves, but the MAC prefer to sell the tickets as they can get the background of the audience and know where they are coming from.
-The place is unique because it has so much to offer to the community and local artists. Hasn't had as many audiences this year due to schools not coming to perform their 'christmas shows' this could be due to lack of funding at school.
-Programmed groups tend to be more adult based, but hiring the spaces can be anybody as it ranges. They have a regular saturday group that provides regular income to the theatre.
The main theatre space is built to be equipped with seats that can be taken away and added again to provide additional seating. For shows with more children, they provide crash mats for them to sit on, which allows them to sit , which allows them to fir more people in, which takes it up to around 250 capacity. They offer artist in residence opportunities, where they are allocated rehearsal spaces and they are available for them to use.
-Co-produce but they don't produce their own work. Companies such as motion hour have used the space to perform shows, and have performed their shows in the main theatre space. The main theatre space has a large white screen that companies can use projections to be played. The space also includes a kabuki drop feature that reveals the back of the stage.
-Mac Birmingham get funding from the council but aren't run by the council, this is also the same for Arts council England, Lottery funding and the postcode lottery. They have to have particular opening times as they provide amenities to the local park, this is a massive reason they are open 364 days of the year.
-At the MAC there are 86 members of staff that work full time. In total, there are 200 members of staff that work there, but some members of staff only work around 2 hours a week. This could be to have an input on a project or to teach a class.
- They dont market a specific occasion at the MAC, unless they are pushing a certain project. The reason for this is because they constantly have different events that are going on in the centre, they just cant market it at the same time. The audiences at the MAC prefect to have a physical copy of a brochures they find they have the older generation that use there cinema facilities. However, social media is still a massive influence for their marketing team and the techniques that they use. For the larger performances that are held at the MAC there will be billboards placed around the city, around 5 weeks before the performances.
-You can hire studio space, but technicians are needed for the equipment, as they are trained in the area especially in the large stage spaces.
They arrange meetings to see what room would be best for what the artists need in there rehearsal time. They ask for 2 weeks notice so they can supply the staff for the events, so they can plan ahead. It also needs to fit around whatever has been booked in the diary before.
-Catering is all in house and people who enter the MAC are not allowed to consume their own food as it is all supplied on site.
-Prices are all kept the same depending on the group, it goes by the size of the room/space. So there is a standard price set for everybody depending on which space and equipment they are in need of.
-The hexagon theatre is used mainly for stand up comedy, music, musical theatre and conferences. It can also offer screenings, even through the projection isn't of a high quality but still useable.the theatre seats 84 people and has a unique shape designed around the staging area. The technology in the theatre isn't up to the level of the larger theatres, lighting is much older which means the performances can only have basic lighting.
-The Foyle studio is a flexible performing space that seats 126 people, they use bench seating. The space can be used for performances or classes, this space gets used regularly. The theatre was built in 2010 so is relatively new. This was something that got changed when they received funding as this space used to be a roof.
-The cinema screening is shown up to 2 times a day. The cinema shows a mixture of current and older films. The MAC normally show the new films after they have been released . If they show them the minute they have been released, they have to show the film a certain amount of times. They made a deal with distributors to allow them to screen the films and live productions such as ballet and operas. They have a cinema producer that decides and allocates what is screened and at what time they are screened at. The cinema can hold up to 150 people in total.
-Depending on the show, the turn around time is between 4-8 hours, including the process of getting the audience in and out. Technicians within the MAC are all versatile and dont specialise in one area. For smaller showcases, they will bring their own technicians and have one from the MAC also, but for bigger productions they bring multiple people with the MAC staff.
-They offer to sell tickets for performances if they require it, or the company can sell themselves, but the MAC prefer to sell the tickets as they can get the background of the audience and know where they are coming from.
-The place is unique because it has so much to offer to the community and local artists. They have found out that due to the schools not have a lot of funding they cant perform at a theatre and they perform in there own facilities.

Fundraising Ideas ...

Fundraising is something that i knew we needed to start at the start of this process to get the maximum amount of money that is needed to cater for all of our pieces. As a group we really didn't want t have a small budget, for a show that we are working extremely hard towards. We started to write notes and ideas of what we could do for activities that our target audience would be interested and wouldn't mind paying for. This is something that potentially could be done around all of the college or just the performing arts and sports block. Most of our fundraising will be made form the performing arts team. When thinking about making a profit we had to take in consideration that we have 76 performing arts students over all the different levels. This is a list of the ideas that we came up with...
-Unite refreshments- We think that selling refreshments would sell at the unite festival over the three nights of shows. This is something that we all agreed on and will work out who is buying what refreshment nearer the time.
-Sweet and Popcorn cones- We have figured out that over our years at BSDC the audience is heavily children based. This is where we thought that sweet treats for the children whilst the show is on would be perfect. We were able to work out the profit we would make on a rough average that we would sell. We need to make a profit, as well as making enough cones.
-From past fundraising events cake sales have always been very successful. This is something that all of the team have agreed on getting from our own pockets, not lowering the budget where we can help it. We also have back up plan that if we don't sell all cakes we could walk around the college selling them to other students, getting rid of all our produce.
-Cream your teacher, this is an idea that would be get all performing arts and sport students involved. We have got all tecahers permission to get involved in the idea including sport teachers bringing in sports students.
-A raffle is another idea that we will be doing over the next few months. We will be able to sell tickets within our own families and also be able to sell at the Unite festival for the three nights. As a group we will be looking out for raffle prizes and will draw the raffle at the HNC/D end of year show.
-We also want to create programmes for the show that are different and made professionally. This is something that we will be looking at taking out of our budget, but we want to be making a profit from these. This is something that we will be working out throughout the next few weeks. We cant leave this too long without paying attention to due to printing times and costs.
-To include the makeup students in this situation we have decided to have a scary makeup day near halloween. This is where students have the opportunity to wear halloween makeup throughout there lessons and it gets judged by head of hair and beauty.

After having a meeting with a senior member of the college we found out that our budget for our end of year piece for actors and dancers is £150. This meant that we have £75 for each show to start with. This is lower than we expect, but we couldn't do anything about this situation and it meant that we needed to spend more time in terms of fundraising compared to what we thought we would be raising.

We were also given a sponsorship by a costume company of £75 This is something that both the dancers and actors were able to receive. Which meant that actors and dancers got £150 each.

Bake sale- As a team we raised £57.06 in this fundraising event.

Scary makeup day- We raised £12 in total for this event.

PJ Day- We raised £59, where all students wore pjs and donated £1.

The £75 that has been given to us on the college credit card has been used for props for the piece and the rest of the money that we have raised is all in cash including the sponsorship. It is my job as a head of funding to make sure where the money is going and make sure it is managed throughout.

To this date i haven't been able to take off money for a few costumes that we have all individually ordered as i haven't been able to get everyones receipts and we have all bought this dress for different prices due to the sale. This is something that i will be doing as soon as everyones dresses have arrived.

Sweet cones...

Without spending a penny from the money we have been given and raised we have a Total of £295.97.This is including fundraing and money that has been given to us from college and sponsor ships

This is everything that has come out of the budget. These can be for costumes, set, props or for fundraising.
Out goings-
-String- £1
-Bells- £17.91
-Dresses-TBC
-Nandos voucher- £10
-Sweets/Cakes- £29
-Material-£30

After all of this we have £208.06 to spend.

The actors running totals has been sealed with in a completely different way using a different system that helps the dancers to work with actors. I have done a spread sheet that the actors have been able to add to once they have spent. This is something that i has really struggled with in terms of communication. Which has made my job slightly harder as communication hasn't been to the standard i would of wanted it to.

We wanted to our programmes look professional and include more information the the standard programmes that are normally given at the performing arts showcases at BSDC. We started at looking at the different samples from various professional performances. We want the programme to include...
-Biography of all the higher education students
-Biography of all the Tutors and Course Leaders
-Running order
-A section that gives an idea of the different choreography pieces that we students are creating.
-Pictures of the dances that are included in the show.
We have decided to use the same programme for the two different shows acting and dancing. This way we won't be wasting any money or loosing money. As there are more dancers than actors and we wouldn't want there not to be another for either. The printing costs also won't be as high than having two separate programmes. As a group we created a prototype that we did a rough copy on. To get other subjects involved within this project we got in touch with a media designer to help create the programme so we get skills that we wouldn't be able to do as a performing arts team. This will also save us money in terms of a designer.
We want to include pictures within the programmes so a job that we need to do is find a date where dancers, actors and a photographer are all available to take pictures. Also we need to have an idea of movement and costume that we would have pictures in for the programmes so we would need to do this within a few week time.
We need to make sure that the programme quotes are done in colour, black and white, A5, A4. We also need to make sure that we are all on the same page in terms of the theme and colour scheme when planning.

After designing a prototype, we have come to the conclusion that we need to have 20 sides, 50 copies on A4 paper. We worked this amount of programmes by the number of the seats that are available. As a group we are going to look into getting lots of different quotes to find one that would suite us the best. Whilst looking for the different quotes we need to make sure that all of the companies are local that we can pick them up, which will knock off postage fees.

In todays session, we were able to sit as a team and look through the job roles that make up a performance. This list that we came up with was ...
-Stage Manger
-Lighting technician
-Front of house staff
-Costumes
-Funding officer
Between all of us we had to split the jobs up with what we all wanted to do. I got given the role of a funding officer. As you can see on my job description for a funding officer this includes a lot of work and responsibilities throughout the whole process for actors and dancers. After i got given this job role i went home and added more research just so i am 100% confident with what i have to do.

Our first idea, that we really wanted to work on throughout this process is making a programme that we would be able to sell throughout the actors and dancers showcase. As you can see from our research into these programmes, we will be making a profit if all programmes are sold. As a group we have crossed the closest printing company that we can pick the programmes up from that will cost no postage for nearly 150 programmes. Small savings like this will all add u to our budget. Again this is part of my job, making sure that the money is being spent correctly and not be wasted. We also all made a quote for a printing company. The image to the right of this column shows you the email quote i sent for and received. As you can see in the column that focuses on programmes, there is a lot to think about when printing a programme.
This week i haven't got an jobs that i need to be working on as a funding officer as this system is all under a plan and doesn't yet need my funding contribution.

This week we were able to speaking to a higher member of staff and get answers about the budget. She will need be able to give us the budget that the college finance have been able to give us. These are the questions and answers that we used in the meeting...
For PPP we have to organise our own showcase which spreads across two days, Dance and Acting. As part of the unit they have to assign themselves job roles as part of the unit.

What budget do we have for the showcase?

Is there anything specific that it needs to be allocated for?

Is there a HE budget?

That’s to cover their own choreographies, if we run from a budget we are able to keep the costumes and props used rather than students using their maintenance to pay for them separately. We could use what we’ve already got and embellish them. Typical lyrical costume is between £20-£30. Materials for sets for acting are non existent. This unit ties in with the marketing unit, and fundraising has began to start creating a budget for programmes etc. (Admin)

Budget needed is mainly for costume, set and props.

Is the budget set at a specific amount per performance?

It is dispersed by the amount of budget the college has and then separated in terms of what is needed. Maintenance, Materials etc.. But it will be a set budget that you can work with. Students need to sit and work out what is needed in what areas, set, costume, paint... Split between the two shows. Try and get the most of what you’ve got and purchase things that are flexible/ reusable. Rather than purchasing consumables that can only be used one. Be clever with the resources you’ve already got to try and minimise excessive/un-necessary spending.

Is there anyone you can approach to help us to create the programmes and take photos? To start building the programmes with information on pieces and artists in residence.

What is the evacuation procedure with an audience? “We’re not expecting any fire alarms tonight, but if the alarm is sounded then this is the procedure.” Initial announcement (What’s expected, no filming of the pieces etc.. )

Meeting 2 set for 23/01/19 to answer questions and arrange for graphics design to discuss programmes. Approach marketing to get quotes as well as asking for quotes elsewhere.

Printing.com

Rink print

Pintrest (create a style board)

Need to know how many pages (4pp) 4 pages = 8 sides

Size

Paper stock (glossy, uncoated, matte)

From this meeting we have been able to get another HNC learner on board with this task and are going to get her to design the poster. Mixing these two different subjects together will allow us to have the best outcome in terms of a lot of skills have been used throughout.

This week we were able to find our final budget from the college for the two showcases. We found out that our total budget is £150, which means each show case has £75 before fundraising and raising our own money. We also got to look at different programmes and plan, getting a rough idea of what we want our programme to look like. You can see many of our decisions in the programme section on this Padlet page. Our final task for this lesson was to make sure that we have created posters for all our fundraising events that will be coming up within the next few months. These posters will be spread around the college, making awareness that we are raising money for our showcase. As a dance group of 9 students, its is extremely hard to put a show on only using £75 with the ideas that we have for this show. You can see all the posters and show posters to the left of this Padlet page.
Over this week we will be able to collect and finalise the best quote and decide which one we are using. We will also need to email the design student and make sure that she will be able to join our meeting so we can discuss further about the design of the programme.

In todays lesson, we worked really hard on creating the posters for the fundraising activities over the next few months for example...
-24th October- Halloween Makeup
-5th December- PJ Day
-20th March- Cream your teachers face
-27th February- Cake Bake sale

We all then went off into partners and created a poster making sure that it has all the correct information on. We also then had to make sure that all students were in on these days making sure that there are the maximum amount of students in college that we can cope with whilst fundraising.
We also decided on what cake everyone was bringing for the cake bake sale that will be happening within the next few weeks.
We managed to meet the designer and show her the prototype that we have created for a rough copy of the programme and went through colour scheme, and theme. We wanted the theme very basic and understandable to read but have an edge to it at the same time. There are photos of the prototype within the programme section on this padlet.

Throughout todays lesson, our main plan was to be able to send the designer all of the written work that is involved in the programmes, so she has plenty of time to put the booklet together. We first had to go through the running order making sure that people will be able to make it to stage and that everything is spaced out. This is the running order that we created in todays lesson(picture to the right of this column). We also all wanted to have our own biography section where we can explain to the audience what experiences we have had and also what our intentions are for our futures. Some of the team have a piece of choreography in the show and wanted to put a description of there piece allowing the audience to have some background knowledge in the pieces before watching them.

We also did some more research into the printing quotes and have found out that our marketing department will be sorting these out for us and will use the company that is normally used for college materials. This is something that is now out of our hands but is now down to us to send all information to the designer to get the design done ASAP, allowing us enough time to get them printed.

As we still had time to change content on the programmes as next week the designer will finalise the programme. We also counted the amount of money that we have raised so far and worked this out with the budget that we had on paper. The budgeting information is in the budgeting column at the start of this pallet page. This lesson was very mutely needed in terms everyone getting on the same making sure that we don't loose track of the time that we have to make sure that everything set and costumes are ordered that need to as we have half term to take in to counter with dates.

In todays session, we had a meeting with the programme designer, going through all designs making sure that we have included everything that is needed in it. We also needed to follow up a few actors that needed to send us there headshot. This is something that i feel has let us down, in terms of communication. This job should of been done within the previous lesson and sent to the designer for printing. We needed to add last minute bits of information like quotes what the actors will have over the pictures. By the end of this lesson, we were able to send this off to the printing company as they advise to leave unto 4 weeks to get the programmes printed. We also needed to pass all this information onto Steph, who is a higher member of that that will be dealing with the programmes. We also needed to make a few changes in term so the running order making sure that we avoid quick changes as much as possible.

In todays lesson, i was able to speak to the acting team and get an update on there finances from the last few weeks. This i updated the speed making sure that they have a running total, and have an up to date amount of money that they have left. This is something else as well that i did with my dancing team. I made a list of what last minute items we need for the showcase so we know how to budget for them. I also need made a note of the amount of money that the girls paid for the dresses and this will be re-enbursed as the college will be keeping this for future shows. The dresses kept going up and down in the sale i need to make sure that everyone gets back what they have paid, the girls have sent me there online receipt and i will be giving them the money back once everyones dresses have arrived.
The list of small items that we need to order are...
-Phone lights
-Spanish fans
-Hair accessories
-Ribbon
As a team we need to order and shop for these items asap as we want to be organised and prepared for the show. I have left todays lesson knowing who is picking the programmes up and what we need to get as a team over the next current week.

For unite dance festival, we were given 2 different job roles over the three show nights. We had many different responsibilities to try and make the show as smooth as possible. On the first night of this festival me and a peer were given the responsibility of being front of house staff selling tickets, raffle tickets and sweet/popcorn cones. For the process, i feel like me and my peer performed this job roles well and were confident with the customers that we served. We then were able to sell cakes and drinks in the interval raising money for our showcase. This was something that really pushed us and bought cakes for. the three shows were all nearly sell outs this was the perfect opportunity to get s many people involved.
Another job role that i was given for one of the nights for this festival was to look after one of our external groups that were given to me. The responsibilites that came with this was...
-Collect the students/groups from the reception, making sure that they know where they are going.
-Make them feel welcome, make sure that they all have refreshments and there costumes.
-Go through the running order with them, making sure they know the order of the costume that they need to wear throughout the show.
-Make sure that each dance has a few run throughs with tech and dress rehearsal.
- Go and get the group and take them to stage in the correct time.
-Make sure that parents feel safe leaving there children with the group.
- When leaving make sure that they know the exit.

Quote for Choreography in Programme

"Infertility is a contemporary style piece that’s based on a true story that’s personal to me. I have chosen 6 dancers from level 3 that I feel will portray the journey that my parents have been through when trying to conceive a child. It shows the different stages of being devastated when being unsuccessful time upon time. The dynamics of the dance portray the love between a couple, the patience they had to endure along with the frustration, hurt and the pain of constant failure. Mum and Dad were desperate for a family, a baby to love unconditionally, to watch grow, make new memories, the more they wanted this the further away their dreams felt.... drifting into the distance..... time passing by.......still nothing. The world of science and biology became a whole new world.... opened so many doors, gave so many options but never comforting, never 100% assured. When going through the first stages of IVF mum and dad came to the conclusion of adopting as IVF wasn’t working. When they stopped thinking science, biology kicked in..... natural procreation occurred. This is where a miracle happened and they found out they were successful in creating not one baby but two. They felt like they were the luckiest alive and the love and support they have for each other is something I only dream of having. Throughout this piece you will see the pure emotion from the dancers as they go through each step of the journey. My parents are my inspiration and I can’t thank them enough for the support they have given both me and my twin sister."

Biography-
Lauren’s Bio

I started my training at the age of 3 in a primary ballet class. My training then progressed to a dance school in Nottingham, Gedling Ballet School. I worked through the Royal Academy of Dance grades to an Advance Level. Alongside this I studied tap, modern and lyrical dance however ballet still remains my passion. Throughout the years I have successfully auditioned for English Youth Ballet and Midland Theatre Ballet where we have had the opportunity to perform in theatres such as Birmingham Crescent Theatre and REP theatre, The Grand theatre in Wolverhampton and the Theatre Severn in Shrewsbury. Since joining the college I have had opportunities to perform in Her Majesty’s Theatre and Saddlers Wells with Mardi Gras Dance Company. I have achieved distinction star in my level 3 diploma in dance and continued my studies on the HE program here at BSDC where I have had the honour of teaching ballet at the college for BTEC Level 2 and 3 this year, I love seeing the progression of the students which has enthused my passion to teach at further education level. I have also had the pleasure of teaching special educational needs students in Coventry, this was one of the most rewarding experiences to date. Wanting to further my career in teaching, I have just qualified in Progressive Ballet Technique training. PBT gives me the chance to widen students view of ballet and help them to look after their bodies keeping good strength and flexibility. I want to continue broadening my teaching experience and see where this takes me in the Education Sector.
