So Fresno plays a role in the story for its racial demographics being demonstrated in the book. It also is a major city with over 500,00 people meaning that jobs are most likely abundant. So that allowed for on elf the brother to try and get a job in the book.

School. A lot of the stories would not work anymore if school was not in the book. For instance they couldn't have the school play. And Lorena couldn't have forgotten Eddie's jacket at school.
